Nikon Coolpix S600

Compact and attractive; very nice outdoor photos; optical image stabilization; relatively wide-angle lens.

Annoying interface conventions; slow shot-to-shot performance.

A good, though not outstanding compact camera, the Nikon Coolpix S600 is hindered by some shortcomings in its performance and operation.

I admit to having mixed feelings about the Nikon Coolpix S600. Although it's one of the faster Coolpix S series cameras we've tested lately, the S600 nevertheless has some sluggish aspects to its performance. I really like the S600's scroll wheel;...

Nikon Coolpix S600

The Nikon Coolpix S600 is a capable and speedy basic point-and-shooter, but at $300, it should offer more than a bare-bones feature set and so-so performance.

Slim body. Lightning-fast boot-up time. Variety of useful in-camera editing options.

Expensive. Limited feature set. Long lag time between shots. Daylight shots slightly muted. Significant barrel distortion. Mediocre face-detection performance.

The 10-megapixel Nikon Coolpix S600 ($299.95 list) is about as basic as entry-level cameras come. The most apt descriptor I can think of for the Nikon Coolpix S600 is average. Or, if you're a Nikon fan, you can pick up the Coolpix P60, which...

Nikon Coolpix S600

I admit to having mixed feelings about the Nikon Coolpix S600. On one hand, it's a very attractive-looking ultracompact capable of producing pretty 10-megapixel photos. But on the other, it's a tad slow and underfeatured with an occasionally annoying inte...

Nikon Coolpix S600 compact digital camera review

By Chris Coleman

The Nikon Coolpix S600 boots up in a flash, but were its photos as quick to impress us??

Good image quality. Good macro. VR lens provides excellent stabilization. Fastest boot-up speed in class.

Very high price. Image quality subpar compared to similarly expensive 8-megapixel cameras. Thick body.

The Nikon Coolpix S600: Design - Good The Nikon Coolpix S600 is a well reasoned collection of finished metal, rounded edges, and logical design-accents. The Nikon S600 also features most standard P&S aids, including in-camera red-eye reduction,...

Nikon Coolpix S600, a review of Nikon Coolpix S600

By Dan Havlik

Award: Editor's Choice!

Thanks to its fast startup, superior image quality, and handy scroll wheel, the Coolpix S600 is our favorite bang-for-your-buck digicam.

Excellent sharpness in Macro mode, Good life-like color, Very fast start-up time, Easy-to-use scroll wheel

Slow shot-to-shot speed, So-so movie mode

After a week of vigorously rubbing the icons on the second unit and traveling with the camera in a full purse, we saw minimal wear and tear on the S600. Just a tiny spec of the trashcan icon was missing, which we consider acceptable. Therefore, we've upgr...

Like all recent Coolpix cameras, the S600 benefits from Nikon's EXPEED image processing system that optimizes noise reduction and improves the signal-to-noise ratio. The S600 also has an enhanced face-priority auto focus mode that can now detect and focus...
