HDMI upconversion to 720p and 1080i resolutions; can play back DivX files; solid disc compatibility; relatively inexpensive.

Cannot deliver full DVD resolution over HDMI; HDMI output cannot pass signals from VCR.

The inexpensive Samsung DVD-V9650 DVD/VCR combo unit has an HDMI output, a nice design, and DivX compatibility, but its soft video quality falls short of other HDMI players we've tested.

While HDMI with upconversion was a feature once reserved for cutting-edge products geared toward enthusiasts, it's now made its way to less expensive models, including DVD/VCR combo units such as the Samsung DVD-V9650 ($130). Upconversion by a DVD player
