Kodak Zi6 (black) review

By David Carnoy

Solid 720p video ; comparatively large LCD ; memory-card expansion slot ; AA rechargeable batteries included along with protective carrying case and video output cables

Insufficient onboard memory and price doesn't include an optional memory card ; can't recharge batteries via USB connector ; included software isn't Mac compatible

While bigger than most of its competitors and high priced for a mini camcorder, the Kodak Zi6's attractive design and decent video quality adequately compensate for some usability drawbacks.

Like many inexpensive competitors, the Kodak Zi6 is technically an HD camcorder the way a tomato is technically a fruit: it meets the definition, but doesn't deliver the experience. True, the Zi6 records video in 1,280x720-pixel resolution at both...

Kodak ZI6 Pocket Video Camera

By Tim Moynihan

For a pocket camcorder, Kodak's Zi6 Pocket Video Camera ($180 as of 3/23/2009) has a ton of features and shoots video with surprisingly bright colors. It won't replace your full-sized camcorder or even rival such a camcorder's feature set, but it does ...

Frame-rate options and vivid footage ; Removable, expandable storage

Colors look a bit blown out ; Focus quality can be spotty

At $180, it's $50 cheaper than Pure Digital's Flip Mino HD, which makes it a smart buy. Just be sure to factor in the cost of a high-capacity SDHC card if you don't have one already, and don't rule out the Flip Mino HD if you want a more cinematic ...

To see how footage captured with the Kodak Zi6 compares to other HD pocket camcorders, watch our test videos: Wide-angle test | All in all, the Kodak Zi6 is a good option for those who want a pocket camcorder that offers more control over your...

Review: Kodak Zi6 HD mini camcorder

By Christopher Breen

The mini camcorder market is heating up. Kodak's new HD-capable device is an impressive offering and is a definite contender amongst camcorders such as Pure Digital's Flip Ultra and Flip Mino.

720p video ; larger LCD than the competition ; removable storage ; uses replaceable batteries ; saves capture in natively Mac-compatible format

No image stabilization, making camera shake likely ; included software is Windows-only ; low-light results not great

Like the Flip camcorders, the Zi6 includes a built-in USB connector. Just press a button on the front of the camera and out pops the connector. Its 2x zoom lens lets you zoom like you can with a Flip, but the Zi6 also includes a Macro switch that, ...

Kodak Zi6 Camcorder Review

By David Kender

If you think you've seen a slew of manufacturers horning in on the camcorder market lately, you're not mistaken. The Pure Digital Flip created enough waves with its winning combination of "easy meets dirt cheap" that companies are climbing over each ...

There are no manual controls on the Kodak Zi6, save for a 2x digital zoom and a small, plastic switch on the side to toggle between tele (normal) and macro (up-close) focusing. As with other ultra-compacts, the lack of controls or even a menu is an ...

Kodak Zi6

By Brian Heater

Award: Editor's Choice!

Pure Digital's Flip helped launch the low-priced camcorder revolution last year, and it had price, portability, and ease of use on its side. With the Flip, the focus was on capturing short clips for streaming video sites, and its picture was, at best ...

HD video capture. Large, bright screen. Macro mode. Still-image capture. Solid speaker

Large footprint. Heavy. Very little built-in memory

Kodak's first dedicated video camera carves out its niche in the YouTube camcorder space, offering HD capabilities. Whether that's a plus or a minus comes down to how much you value video quality in an inexpensive video camera.

With the letters "HD" emblazoned high on the front of its faceplate, the Kodak Zi6 ($179.95 direct) clearly has different priorities in mind, and as such, it may carve out an interesting niche in this nascent category.#article{ width: 480px;......

Objects of Desire: Kodak Zi6

By Dan Havlik

If you're looking for a quick and easy way to add a video blog to your Web site but you haven't been impressed with the image quality from those ubiquitous pocket Flip Video camcorders, Kodak is now offering a high definition alternative: the Zi6.

Other things we liked about the Zi6 include its generously sized 2.4-inch LCD, and its slot for SD or SDHC cards of up to 32 gb. It also has 128 mb of internal memory and ships with two pre-charged AA rechargeable NiMH batteries and a charger

In our testing, the 720p high-definition footage from the pocket-size Zi6 was shaky at best- there's no image stabilizer and it's noisy in low light-but it beats the pants off the Flip and comes with a host of extras. Other things we liked about...

Kodak Zi6 Pocket Video Camera Review

By Dana Wollman

Award: Editor's Choice!

This budget camcorder is a winner, thanks to its 720p video, still-photo capability, and expandable storage.

Records 720p HD video at 60 fps, Takes 3-MP still photos, Can accommodate SD Cards up to 32GB, Great price

No optical zoom or image stabilization, Short battery life, Editing software not included

In this area, the Kodak Zi6 falls short of the $179 Flip Mino. The Mino, which shoots VGA movies, was still kicking after days of shooting dozens of short movies

We've seen Flip Video impostors (anyone remember the Creative Vado?), but Kodak's Zi6 is the first pocket camcorder that gives Pure Digital a run for its money. But whereas the Flip Ultra looks kind of like a Fisher-Price toy, the Zi6 has the same...
