Canon PowerShot SD500

Almost the same size as the predecessor PowerShot S500 model, the new Canon PowerShot SD500 features the great looks and sharp design that are a signature of Canon's ELPH cameras. Canon refers to the SD500 as having "Perpetual Curve Design", which ...

Compact size, Solid build, In-camera image stabilization makes all lenses better for low light shooting, Same sensor as 7D, Kit lens covers 18-70mm 35mm equivalent range, Very good to excellent low-light capability, Excellent battery life, Decent ...

Proprietary hot shoe, No PC sync port, No video recording (a fact of life with SLRs), Hand grip may be uncomfortably small for some users, Image noise slightly high at ISO 1600, RAW+JPEG option only saves fine-mode JPEGs. (But that's not a bad choice. ...

The Canon SD500 features a 3x, 7.7-23.1mm zoom lens, equivalent to a 37-111mm zoom on a 35mm camera. Aperture is automatically controlled, but the maximum setting ranges from f/2.8 at full wide angle to f/4.9 at full telephoto. A maximum 4x digital ...

Canon PowerShot SD500

By Simon Joinson

Award: Recommended!

Announced just before PMA in February 2005, the SD500 (which goes by the names of Digital Ixus 700 in Europe and IXY DIGITAL 600 in Japan) is the latest in a long line of ultra-compact 'ELPH' or 'IXUS' cameras stretching back to early 2000 (and a lot ...

Excellent resolution, Very compact and pocketable, Beautifully built and all-metal construction, Excellent color and exposure, Manual (custom) white balance, Fast focus and very responsive performance overall, Good flash performance at short distances ...

Low contrast fine detail (such as foliage or hair) looks soft, AiAF focus unreliable - turn it off, Screen resolution not high enough for a 2.0-inch LCD, Some purple fringing, Slight corner softness at wide angle, Battery life when using LCD not ...

It's not without reason that the IXUS/Elph range has proved so popular; the combination of size, design and materials, performance and decent image quality is a compelling one.

Canon PowerShot SD500 Digital Camera Review

By Emily Raymond

Canon added the 7.1-megapixel PowerShot SD500 to its Digital ELPH line in February, 2005. The new model again expresses Canon's ELPH-line philosophy of excellent imaging in small packaging; the SD500 has a 1/1.8-inch CCD with 7.4 total megapixels and ...

-Sleek, stylish look -Unusual My Colors mode -3 images sizes in movie mode with fast frame rates -Enough megapixels to print a billboard

-Lack of aperture and shutter speed controls -Unless shooting in bright light, noise will be a recurring problem -Limited sensitivity range (if offering long exposure option) -Overpriced MSRP of $499 -zoom switch is not comfortable

The Canon PowerShot SD500 now leads the Digital ELPH-line with 7.1 megapixels on a large 1/1.8-inch CCD, though it strays from the sharp lines of the previous models. With its Perpetual Curve Design and compact body, the digital camera has a stylish ...

Canon Powershot SD500 Digital Elph

By Terry Sullivan

Award: Editor's Choice!

Quick performer. Excellent image quality. Unique My Color feature. Good ergonomics. Sleek and attractive.

Macro mode did not produce good results. Flash had some problems in backlit situations.

The SD500 is a versatile, accurate, fun 7MP compact camera that performed very well on our tests and will appeal to a broad section of shooters. We like it so much, we've awarded it our Editors' Choice.

Canon has added yet another sibling to its ever-popular Digital Elph series—the 7.1-megapixel Canon PowerShot SD500 Digital Elph. In fact, so far, only its enthusiast-class big brother, the Canon PowerShot G6, fared better on this test. The SD500...

Canon PowerShot SD500 First Impressions Review

By Emily Raymond

The compact Canon Digital ELPH series is bulking up; perhaps not as apparent in size, but definitely in megapixels. The Canon PowerShot SD500 has 7.4 total and 7.1 effective megapixels on its large 1/1.8-inch CCD. Besides upgrading the amount of ...

The 7.1-megapixel Canon PowerShot SD500 follows in the tradition of the Digital ELPH line with its compact size and stylish look. However, this model gets a slight makeover with its rounded edges. The added comfort is a welcome feature to the ELPH ...

The Canon PowerShot SD500 has 7.4 total and 7.1 effective megapixels on its large 1/1.8-inch CCD. Besides upgrading the amount of megapixels in this series, Canon redesigns the SD500’s compact outer shell. Retaining a slight 3.37 x 2.24 x...

Canon PowerShot SD500 Digital Elph Digital 7.1-Megapixel Camera Review

By dkozin

After trying out the 5-Megapixel Canon PowerShot SD400 Digital Elph and the 4-Megapixel Canon PowerShot SD300 Digital Elph, I just had to experience the 7.1-Megapixel Canon PowerShot SD500. The camera was difficult to get as it was sold out in many ...

I highly recommend Canon SD500 if you want a miniature, cool yet capable camera with 7.1-megapixel resolution that produces excellent photos with print sizes of up 13x19 inches. It is extremely fast, easy to use and utterly capable.

Canon Digital IXUS 700

By Robert Dubbin

A very well-designed, 7-megapixel snapshot camera. Just don't look for advanced controls

Very well designed ; the best start-up time in its class ; quick shot-to-shot performance ; novel, fast frame-rate movie mode

More frequent than usual purple fringing ; longish flash shot-to-shot times

We really enjoyed shooting with the Canon Digital IXUS 700. We love the Canon Digital IXUS 700's external design; it's small without being unwieldy, feels solid without being heavy (the camera weighs 190g with battery and media installed), and is,...

Canon Ixus 700 Digital Camera

By Stuart Miles

Styling , image quality, 7 megapixels if that's your thing

The high megapixel count will eat memory for breakfast

On paper this is a great model, but in practice do you really need7 megapixels in a compact digital camera.

Do I really need 7 megapixels in a compact digital camera? I ask the question, because that's what the Ixus 700 offers, a 7 megapixel resolution in a body the size of a bar of soap. Space conscious users and Canon will point out that you can...

Canon Ixus 700

Whack a curve on the end of a box. Design genius!

Wonderful styling; Vast array of impressive; features; Fast operation; Top-quality images

A tad expensive for a compact

Styling makes for a subtle twist on a design classic, and helps mark this model out from the rest of the current line-up.

So we were surprised that the design of the new flagship IXUS 700 has been embellished with a subtle curved edge. The 700 utilises the same DIGIC II processing system as on Canon's pro cameras, so super-fast start-up and image writing are the...
