Canon PowerShot SD880 IS (silver) review

Excellent photo quality for its class; optical image stabilization; pleasing interface and design; wide-angle lens

Mode dial spins a bit too freely; button positioning might bother some users; very noticeable fringing

Simply put, the Canon PowerShot SD880 IS is an excellent point-and-shoot camera.

By Jeff Keller

The Canon PowerShot SD880 IS Digital ELPH ($299) is an ultra-compact camera packing a wide-angle 4X zoom lens, a large 3-inch LCD display, optical image stabilization, and a VGA movie mode. It replaces the PowerShot SD870 IS, with these notable new ...

Canon PowerShot SD880 IS

By Brad Soo

The Canon PowerShot SD880 IS Digital ELPH is also known as the Canon Digital IXUS 870 IS in other parts of the world. Not to be confused with the camera's predecessor, the SD870 IS Digital ELPH aka Digital IXUS 860 IS… Yup, Canon's way of naming their ...

Compact stylish design with a wide-angle lens and large screen ; Excellent battery life ; Above average camera performance ; New features are useful: face self-timer, iContrast and smaller movie file sizes ; Effective red-eye removal tool, good image ...

Lacks manual controls and a live histogram ; No HD/720p movie mode and can't use optical zoom while recording movies ; Memory card/battery door isn't too sturdy, poor microphone placement ; Rear command dial gives no tactile ‘clicks' or feedback, easy ...

The 10 megapixel Canon PowerShot SD880 IS Digital ELPH is a nice evolutionary update to the previous SD870 IS Digital ELPH. We now get 2 more megapixels, a slightly bigger 4X lens and the same nice 3 inch LCD screen. That's not only it; there are ...

Canon PowerShot SD880 IS Review

By J. Keenan

With the introduction of the Canon PowerShot SD880 IS as successor to the popular SD870, Canon's latest DIGIC IV processing power comes to the SD line.

Good shutter lag and AF performance ; Good color rendition ; Excellent lens performance

No viewfinder ; Sharpening images requires post processing outside of camera

has installed a slightly larger 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor in place of the 1/2.5-inch imager in the SD870. So far so good - let's take a closer look at the SD880 and see what we find

Canon Powershot SD880 IS Review

By Cybernium

The Canon Powershot SD880 IS is an ultra-compact with a stabilized wide-angle lens. This used to be a rare thing but now many manufacturers offer this. The SD880 features a 4X optical zoom from 28 to 112mm in 35mm equivalent terms.

Nicely saturated colors, Good control over image noise up to ISO 400, Good corner-to-corner lens sharpness, Relatively low distortion, Virtually no chromatic aberrations visible, Superb LCD visibility, Good feature set among ultra-compact cameras

Limited dynamic range, Destructive noise at ISO 800, even more at 1600, Noticeable vignetting at widest angle, Redeye problems, Poor flash coverage near wide-angle, Difficult to hold securely, Buttons and dials prone to accidental change

The rest of image quality is rather good for an ultra-compact: sharpness is good, colors are nicely saturated, noise is relatively low until ISO 400, optical distortion is low and chromatic aberrations are rare. AssessmentThe Canon Powershot SD880...

Optical image stabilization ; very good photo quality ; sturdy and compact design

No optical viewfinder ; flash a little harsh

Easy-as-pie to use, the SD880 IS includes 11 special shooting modes, including Aquarium, Fireworks, and Snow. There's also a high ISO setting for shooting action in low light situations without flash, though noise in the images becomes more noticeable ...
