Decent image quality; comfortable design.
Few manual controls; sluggish performance.
It's a bit slow, and control freaks will be disappointed, but the Olympus Stylus 740 is still a very nice snapshot camera.

The 7-megapixel Olympus Stylus 740 is a slightly scaled-down version of the Stylus 750. They both share the same weather-resistant metal body, the same 36mm-to-180mm (35mm equivalent), 5X optical zoom lens, the same 7-megapixel sensor, and the same image...

The new Olympus Style 740 is a great camera for those who were looking into buying the popular Stylus 750, but didn(tm)t because of the features it had that added to the cost and that were not going to be used by the casual user. The new 740 is very simil...
Anyone who wants to get close to the action should take a good look at the Stylus 740 Digital from Olympus. This camera features a new 5x zoom lens, which is great for scrutinising objects that are a bit further away, and a 7.1 million pixel CCD for photo...
Slim and light, the Olympus Stylus 740 has stunningly good looks, a unique menu system, a 5x zoom, and an all-weather chassis. The Stylus 740's 2.5 inch screen is bright and vibrant indoors, but more difficult to use outdoors, even on cloudy days. We were...
Stylish, ultra-compact design, Large 2.5 inch LCD, All-weather seals and gaskets, Optional underwater case, 7.1 megapixels, 5x optical zoom with up to 28x total zoom, Anti-blur image processing, Live histogram, Help system
Severe chromatic aberration in the corners, Surprisingly bad optics. Only a few small areas in the frame are in focus at any time, LCD very hard to read outdoors, Very small, oddly shaped control buttons, Very stiff Shutter button, An awkward menu system,...
Autofocus is via contrast detection, and ISO sensitivity ranges from 80 to 1,600 equivalent (2,500 being the maximum in some scene modes), and can be controlled automatically, or manually. The Olympus 740 also offers what the company calls "Digital Image...
Like its stable mate Stylus 750, the Olympus Stylus 740 has stunningly good looks, but I was disappointed in its performance. The Olympus Stylus 740 shows some of the worst lens performance we've seen in a modern digicam. And to make matters worse,...
The Stylus 740 is the thinnest 5x optical zoom camera in its class, and it boasts all the quality features you expect from a Stylus. With Digital Image Stabilization (DIS) and Bright Capture Technology, you'll capture near-perfect images every time. DIS h...
We so happened to review the Olympus Stylus 740 the same time we reviewed the Stylus 720 SW. Both are modern 7.1 megapixel cameras that are relatively comparable in size. So why does Olympus offer two such seemingly almost identical cameras? Because they...
Small and light 7.1 megapixel camera with hi-res LCD, , Weather-proofed to handle splashes, a bit of rain and snow, , Great 5X zoom, superior dual image stabilization, , Optional PT-034 underwater case good for 133 feet diving, , Love the many scene modes...
Strictly point & shoot, , Extra cost of dual image stabilization may not be worth it to some, , Use of underwater wide-angle modes requires practice, , Somewhat odd-looking wedge design, , Uses often hard-to-find xD-Picture Card, , , Strictly point &a...

In its own right, the Stylus 740 is a moden digicam that has a whole lot going for it. It is very small and light, yet offers the most desirable 5X optical zoom and comes with a very high-resolution LCD that greatly helps in figuring out which pictures ar...
Olympus Stylus 740 and PT-034 Underwater HousingThinnest 5X optical zoom camera in its class (by Conrad H. We took both the Stylus 740 and the Stylus 720 SW on a diving trip to Florida and extensively tested them both above and under water. That...

However, nothing is ever totally clear-cut, and as our review went on, we grew to like the Stylus 740 more and more. But first we had to get over some prejudices. It is definitely not as handsome as the 720 SW. The big zoom lens dominates the front of the...
