Canon EOS Rebel XS (black, with 75-300mm lens) review

Excellent photo quality for its class; solid performance

Maximum ISO of 1600; no spot meter; annoying, in-viewfinder, focus-point display

The Canon EOS Rebel XS is a good entry-level dSLR, but only its photo quality stands out among the competition.

Canon Rebel XS (black, with 18-55mm lens) review

Excellent photo quality for its class ; solid performance

Maximum ISO of 1600 ; no spot meter ; annoying, in-viewfinder, focus-point display

The Canon EOS Rebel XS is a good entry-level dSLR, but only its photo quality stands out among the competition.

Photo gallery: Canon EOS Rebel XS The baby brother to the Rebel XSi, the Canon EOS Rebel XS is the typical, almost-identical, but slightly less-powerful, version of that camera. As with the XSi, Canon offers two body designs for the XS--an...

Canon EOS 1000D Rebel XS Review Round-Up

By Photocrati Staff

The 1000D does just about everything it needs to do, and everything it does, it does well. It can produce great images at any of its ISO settings and, viewed as a whole, makes a great first DSLR. Canon seems to have gently toned-down the specification ...

Canon EOS Rebel XS - A Review of the Canon EOS Rebel XS Digital Camera

By Dana Wollman

Very good image quality, Fast focusing and shot-to-shot speeds, Automatic sensor-cleaning system, Intuitive interface

Relatively small LCD, Fewer manual options than other entry-level DSLRs, Live View settings difficult to access, No ISO 3200

Like other cameras in its class, the Rebel XS' Live View created a four-second shot-to-shot lag, including a pause as the screen goes dark. Without Live View, there was virtually no shutter lag.

Canon EOS Rebel XS Review

By Jeff Keller

The EOS Rebel XS ($699 list price) is the entry-level model in Canon's digital SLR lineup. The camera is essentially a stripped down version of the Rebel XSi: it has fewer pixels, a slower burst rate, and a smaller LCD than its big brother. I put ...

Very good photo quality, with minimal noise ; Compact body by D-SLR standards (though it's not for everyone) ; Good kit lens, with image stabilization ; Dust reduction system ; Fast performance in most respects ; Live view with contrast detect AF, ...

Rebel XSi only costs a little more ; Small, slippery right hand grip ; Very slow contrast detect AF in live view mode ; nearly useless in low light ; Live view not available in all shooting modes ; LCD and optical viewfinder both on the small side ; ...

The differences are pretty clear between the two cameras. Buying the Rebel XSi gets you "bigger and better" in most (but not all) areas. The thing is, it doesn't cost you much to get those things. For $70 more you can get the Rebel XSi, which makes ...

Canon EOS Rebel XS: EOS Rebel XS

By Ginny Mies

The 10.1-megapixel Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS has just about everything a budding digital photographer could want in a camera: a wide variety of features and modes, excellent image quality, and an affordable price tag. The XS doesn't have as many ...

Great entry-level features Excellent image quality

No spot meter Small, uncomfortable grip

If you're a more seasoned photographer, you might want to shell out an extra $100 for the XSi. But overall, the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS is a great entry-level digital SLR, delivering a handful of advanced features and excellent image quality for a ...

The XS doesn't have as many advanced features as the Digital Rebel XSi, its older sibling and one of our top-ranked digital SLRs, but it is an overall improvement over its predecessor, the Digital Rebel XTi. Would You Buy This?0Yes0No Canon EOS...

Canon EOS Rebel XS

By Tim Barribeau

Canon has introduced its most affordable SLR yet with the Rebel XS, a solid performer priced at $599.99 including a 18-55mm kit lens

The Rebel XS looks almost identical to the step-up model Rebel XSi, which is to say just like every other entry-level SLR on the market. It's primarily built of black plastic, with some textured areas to give you a bit more grip, and an enlarged hand ...

The Olympus E-520 retails for $650, a tad more than the Canon, and scored worse in every lab test except color. In its favor, though, it has a more competent Live View system; in-camera image stabilization, which leads to less expensive lenses, and ...

Canon Rebel XS (black, with 18-55mm lens): Canon Rebel XS Review

By David Rasnake

With lots of carry-over parts from the advanced Rebel XSi, the entry-level Canon Rebel XS is a budget model that's anything but bare bones.

Rebel XSi performance for less bucks ; Fantastic, reliable AF system ; Extremely clean high-ISO shots ; More processing options than you could possibly need

Build quality not great ; Kit lens is of average quality ; Auto white balance struggles at times ; Live view less than useful

The ace up Canon's sleeve in the case of the XS, though, is that this camera retains a surprising amount of the technology that made the XSi an Editor's Choice pick around these parts. If you like what Canon's doing at the entry level but have been ...
