Nikon D3000 (with 18mm-55mm lens)

Beginner-friendly Guide mode ; nicely laid out interactive control panel ; solid photo quality up through ISO 1,600

Extremely basic feature set ; annoying multiselector switch

Its feature set is basic even by entry-level standards, but the Nikon D3000 delivers the photo quality and performance you expect when stepping up to a dSLR, with an optional interface that's very newbie friendly.

Nikon D3000 Review: Field Test Report

By Peter K. Burian

Nikon's D40 and D40x were very popular entry-level DSLRs but the replacement model is even more desirable. While it's also very budget-friendly, the equally small D3000 offers some valuable benefits in spite of the pleasantly low price (about $600 ...

Nikon has a well-earned reputation as a manufacturer of high performance equipment in the pro and semi-pro categories. That cachet extends to their more affordable DSLRs too; in fact, Nikon has sold over a million of the D40/D40x models. The D3000 ...

Nikon D3000

By Steve Morgenstern

For two and a half years, an extraordinary run in the fast-moving digital camera market, the shopper looking for the lowest-cost Nikon digital SLR reached for the Nikon D40, a 6.1-megapixel model originally priced at $600. Now the company has finally ...

The new camera is virtually identical in size and shape to the D40, which is a good thing. Sometimes entry-level SLRs have an unpleasantly toy-like quality. The D3000, however, feels like a Nikon SLR is supposed to feel, with a well designed right ...

Nikon D3000

By PJ Jacobowitz

After almost three years, Nikon has finally decided to retire its popular entry-level Nikon D40 D-SLR. Enter the Nikon D3000, which boasts big upgrades like 10.2-megapixel captures, a 3-inch LCD, and an 11-point autofocus system, all at the budget ...

Affordable. 3-inch LCD. Guide mode and Info button provide automatic operation along with helpful shooting tips. 11 autofocus points

Soft images. Poor low-light performance. Noticeable noise at ISO 800 and above. LCD doesn't support Live View. No video capture

The inexpensive, entry-level Nikon D3000 is a good fit for first-time D-SLR users, but competing shooters in this price range offer sharper, less-noisy images.

The Nikon D3000 looks and feels expensive; its build is similar to the more-expensive ($999 list, body only) Nikon D90, but it's more compact (1.16 pounds) with a smaller grip and fewer buttons. Like other entry-level D-SLR cameras, such as the...

D3000

By Steve Morgenstern

The $600 D3000 boasts a resolution to 10.2 megapixels, fast burst mode speed and an optically stabilized lens. But we found that the quality of the captured images was dissapointing, with poor sharpness and color.

The title of "Least Expensive Nikon SLR" passes from the increasingly antiquated D40 to more full-featured D3000, which in addition to gaining an impressive two decimal places over its predecessor, steps up from 6.1 to 10-megapixel resolution, adds ...

Nikon D3000

By Jeff Keller

As you can see, the D3000 is a pretty significant set up from the D40. It doesn't offer the rotating LCD, live view, or movie mode of the D5000, but for folks just starting out, it may be just what the doctor ordered. And the guide menu (which I'll ...

Nikon D3000, D300s Could Be Coming Soon

By Mike Perlman

The Nikon D3000 could be Nikon's next entry-level DSLR to be announced soon. The Nikon D300s could also be in the pipeline.

wowed us with a stellar image performance, great manual controls and shipped in two different lens packages for a reasonable price tag. We can only imagine the Nikon D3000 will produce similar results, though on a scaled-down budget level platform. ...
