Olympus E-420

By David Fearon

Not the pinnacle of image quality, but superbly compact with plenty of neat features

There's a downside to a smaller sensor, though. Smaller, denser pixels mean increased image noise. This does make itself felt at sensitivities above ISO 400 – the results from the Canons in particular are far cleaner – but below that it's less of an ...

Olympus E-420 Komachi kit

By Dennis Hissink

Olympus E-420 Komachi kit : Named after famous Japanese poet Ono no Komachi, who was renowned for her beauty, the Olympus E-420 Komachi Kit certainly lives up to its namesake. Olympus brings together the E-420 body with the ZUIKO DIGITAL 25mm 1:2.8 ...

Little DSLR that could

By CHONG JINN XIUNG

The Olympus E-420 is one of the smallest DSLR cameras in the market but it's pretty big on features.

Compact and lightweight design ; Live View is great for taking shots at difficult angles ; good dynamic range ; dust reduction system

Poor ISO performance ; slow focusing in Live View mode

While the E-420 has its strengths and weaknesses, the fact that the camera is one of the cheapest, smallest and lightest entry-level DSLR makes the E-420 a great option for photographers looking to purchase their first DSLR.

Olympus E-420

By David Fearon

If you want a DSLR that's actually fun to use and damn good value too, the E-420 migh

It uses a smaller sensor than the APS-C sized models of its competitors, which it calls the Four-Thirds system. A smaller sensor means the lenses can also be more compact. The downside is that a smaller sensor means more image noise, so the E-420 lags ...

Olympus E-420

By Renaud Labracherie

The Olympus E-420 is first and foremost of interest for its small size and light weight. While the photos produced by this camera are convincing, image quality (noise control, dynamic, etc.) is a bit behind the competition.

- Image quality in low sensitivities, - Efficient anti-dust system, - Direct aiming with the LCD, - Direct access to settings via the screen, - Minimal weight and size

- High latency with direct shooting, - No stabilization, - Only a 3 point autofocus system, - Narrow optical viewfinder, screen doesn't turn off automatically, - Reduced image dynamic

Review: Olympus E-420 with Zuiko Digital 25mm F2.8

By Leonard Goh

We put together one of the smallest dSLR systems and found out it behaved more like a compact shooter.

Small form factor ; Live View with autofocus ; scene modes to help beginners get started ; Super Sonic Wave Filter

No image stabilization system ; autofocus sluggish in dim environment ; no dedicated focusing mode switch

The Olympus E-420 is a good beginner's dSLR with an extremely compact footprint that should go well with travelers. Just don't expect any fancy features for this budget model.

Although it didn't raise a ruckus when it was announced in April, the Olympus E-420 still caught our attention with its petite size. The company claims this dSLR is the smallest and lightest in its class. When we first unboxed the shooter, we thought...

Olympus E-420 Digital SLR

By Jamie Harrison

Award: Recommended!

Hailed as the world's smallest and lightest DSLR, the Olympus E-420 replaces the E-410 in the Olympus Four-Thirds system line-up.

There's very little to criticise in the overall specification and performance of the E-420. I like it's size - it's ideal for travelling and is reminiscent of my old OM4 in some aspects of its handling. Images are generally good too, with excellent ...

With 10 million effective pixels, from a total of 11.8 million, it seems like Olympus may have hit a bottleneck with the four-thirds sensor. This is the sixth DSLR in the range (since the original E-400) to feature this pixel count - and that...

Olympus E-420 Digital SLR Review

Award: Highly Recommended!

Olympus have done it again. They've released a successor to a previous DSLR that looks the same but has changed enough for Matt Grayson to not be able to copy and paste.

Small and lightweight, Easy-to-use, Great noise control, Uses FourThirds standard

Lack of a grip

For the beginner in photography, the Olympus E-420 is a very capable camera that will accept some extremely good lenses made by Olympus, Leica and Sigma as the FourThirds system is used by a number of companies allowing you to interchange between them

Olympus E-420

The small size of the Olympus E-420 will make it a firm favourite for anyone with smaller hands or who likes to travel light

Robust build ; High quality technology ; Comfortable and easy to use ; Great value ; Impressive colours

No image stabilisation

At its heart, the E-410 has a Four-Thirds NMOS image sensor with an increased dynamic range with about an extra stop or so over the E-410. The colours are superb with skin tones, landscapes and blue skies rendering well in JPEG. Auto white balance has ...

Well, if you give the Olympus E-420 a chance, not only will you find it astonishing value, but its dinky size means you'll end up taking it everywhere with you. This is the second small Olympus DSLR and looks and feels a bit like the legendary OM...
