TiVo Series3 HD DVR (32-HD hours) review

By John P. Falcone

Can record two HD programs simultaneously while playing back a third previously recorded one ; accepts cable TV and over-the-air signals ; replaces your existing cable box ; 30-second commercial skip ; excellent user-friendly interface and remote ; ...

Extremely expensive, especially compared to "free" DVRs available from cable providers ; does not work with pay-per-view and video-on-demand services ; requires monthly fee in addition to cable bill ; CableCard installation can be problematic ; no ...

The Series3 delivers dual-tuner HD recording and some worthwhile networking features to cable customers, but the exorbitant price tag will be too much for all but the most devoted TiVo fans.

Additionally, the Series3 offers all of the key DVR features that TiVo pioneered: Wish List searches, Season Pass recordings, and TiVo Suggestions based on the thumbs-up and thumbs-down viewing interests. For experienced TiVo watchers, we can cut...

TiVo Series3 HD DVR (32 HD hours)

By John P. Falcone

If you asked dedicated TiVo fans to design the ultimate version of their favorite DVR, they'd probably say, "Give me all the great features and excellent interface from past TiVo models, but add dual tuners and the ability to record high-definition ...

TiVo Series 3 Lite

By Rick Broida

The new TiVo HD may be right around the corner, but that doesn't mean we don't have love for its older, wiser cousin, the Series3. Yes, it sports an unholy price tag, but we don't mind. It's still the world's best high definition-compatible DVR, which ...

Whopping 250GB hard drive holds up to 32 hours of HD programming. Supports remote scheduling via the web. Backlit remote control for easy channel surfing in the dark. Parent-friendly KidZone keeps the tykes away from racy content.

Crazy expensive, and that's not counting the monthly fee. Requires a digital antenna or CableCard decoder for dual-tuner use. Doesn't support TiVoToGo or multi-room viewing.

By Robert Heron

Award: Editor's Choice!

Dual-tuner HD recorder. Updated remote now fully backlit. Very easy to use.

The TiVo Series3 is a solid, dual-tuning HD recorder that can be used with off-air and cable sources, but this early version is expensive and its menus are not completely optimized for HD displays.

The TiVo Series3 HD Digital Media Recorder ($799.99 list) is the high-definition successor to the company's popular Series2 DVR, and this newest member of the TiVo family expands upon its predecessor's offerings with more storage and more ways...
