Nikon SB900

By Lee Yuan Sheng

Introduced together with the Nikon D700 in early July, the SB900 replaces the SB800 as Nikon's high-end flash. It brings a few new features, such as increased flash cycle times, a new flash head with a twist, as well as an all-new user interface. How ...

Decreased recycle times (and without needing a 5th battery too) ; A proper switch that not only turns on the flash, but enables the wireless modes ; New user interface is a bit quicker and easier to operate for many of the flash's myriad settings ; A ...

at the cost of making the new flash much bigger than its predecessors ; No increase in power or distance reached ; Hotshoe stand (AS-21) mounting screw threads are plastic. Unforgivable cost cutting ; As of now, the SB800 still is on sale, and ...

At the end of it, the SB900 is indeed a capable flash, with even better recycle times and packing plenty of power for a hotshoe flash. The problem, however, is that compared to the SB800, it offers just two new features I consider great, as well as ...

Hands on with the Nikon SB-900

By Theano Nikitas

Though its jumbo-sized and pricey, the Nikon SB-900 is a fast and powerful flash that's a snap to use.

Easy and efficient user interface ; powerful and fast ; extended zoom range ; versatile light control

Large ; pricey ; optional battery pack works only with SB-900

Size and price may be the SB-900's biggest stumbling blocks but if you need power, speed, and flexibility (and want an almost intuitive user interface), you'll quickly find space in your camera bag for this impressive flash

Nikon Speedlight SB-900

By Nigel Atherton

Review of the Nikon Speedlight SB-900 flash

Interface, range of functions, flawless performance

Complicated, expensive, quite large

Flash performance is flawless - powerful, fast and unerringly accurate, with fine control over every aspect of its operation. The wireless operation is also impressive (once you figure out how to set it up). Its complexity, however, is also its ...

Nikon SB-900 Speedlight

By Margaret Brown

The SB-900 flash is an evolution of the SB-800 model but still runs on four AA batteries (not supplied) and forms the heart of Nikon's Creative Lighting System. Larger and radically different in design from the SB-800, the new model offers a GN of 48 ...

We were only able to test the SB-900's capabilities as a single flash unit and in conjunction with the D700's built-in flash. And, not having reviewed the SB-800, we were unable to compare the performance of the two flash units. Suffice it to say we ...

Owners of Nikon's D3 and D700 cameras will also be able to apply firmware updates to their SB-900 flashes via the camera. (This feature is claimed as a world's first.)On the downside, the SB-900 is strictly i-TTL and won't work on older camera...

Nikon Speedlight SB-900 Portable Flash and Lighting Review

Award: Highly Recommended!

After paving the way to new photographic standards in their recent DSLRs, can Nikon do the same with their flashguns? Matt Grayson is on hand to test the new SB-900.

Excellent build quality, Loads of features should cope with every scenario, 180 degree turning circle both ways, Extended range of up to 200mm

Expensive, Entry to menu not very clear

I've never been a fan of using flashguns as I prefer studio lights or ambient light, but I have to admit that if all flashguns performed to this standard, I'd use one. The build quality is excellent as is the menu system and I've even got to enjoy ...

a) The SB-900's multi-step zoom can cover a picture angle equivalent to 17-200mm, while the SB-800 is restricted to 24-105mm

Bigger, better, easier

Even more so than any single product introduced by Nikon lately, the SB-900 is the most revamped - and there's plenty to like.

More power ; faster recycling time ; flashgun head has more positionable angles ; better control layout and design

Power switch a little small and fiddly to use ; bigger and heavier than its predecessors

That said, the SB-900 is a real joy to use and after this review, I'll have to save up for one.
