Synology DS209+ NAS server

Award: Editor's Choice!

Very fast throughput ; loads of features ; robust and intuitive Web interface ; RAID 1 and RAID 0 support ; great expandability ; Download Station supports eMule, BitTorrent and Web sites that require authentication

Requires some networking knowhow to use and take advantage of its advanced features ; Surveillance Station supports only one camera out of the box ; eSATA port located on the front ; requires a tool to install hard drives ; expensive

Although expensive and difficult to use for networking novices, the Synology DS209+ offers awesome throughput speed and nearly all the features you could ever need in a NAS server.

Setup and ease of use The Synology DS209+ review unit we received comes with two 500GB hard drives; however, Synology does not sell the DS209+ with any hard drives and you will be required to install your own. (Most NAS servers that we've reviewed...

Can be somewhat difficult to configure Drives not user-accessible

This model screamed through our performance tests: It required just 216 seconds to copy our 3GB folder of files

Synology - Disk Station DS209

At first glance the Disk Station DS209 from Synology looks like a fairly run-of-the-mill small NAS (Network Attached Storage) appliance. But that's far from the case, the compact DS209 delivering a high level of performance plus ...

You have to pay a premium for the Synology Disk Station DS209 and extra for disks to go in it, but it's still good value for money. It's easy to configure, fast, reliable and flexible, plus it can do a lot more than just share files. A veritable ...

Synology DS209

synology ds209 review: The Synology DS209 is an excellent little unit, with a more complex than necessary set up routine. Still for those looking for a highly featured, high performing NAS with an easy to use and flashy menu, it's certainly a ...

Small, encouraging design ; Heavily featured ; Quite fast

Initial set up routine too complex for average users ; Disk management could use some work

The Synology DS209 is an excellent little unit, with a more complex than necessary set up routine. DesignThe petite (for a NAS, anyway) Synology DS209 breaks from the pack by covering itself in white plastic and stepping away from the stark...

This month sees Synology release an updated version of the excellent DS 207 (reviewed September 2007) network attached storage device called the DS209+

A quick refresher if you, like me, have trouble remembering back to 2007 - the DiskStation series of NAS boxes are a veritable Swiss Army Knife of tools and a single DS207 or DS209+ will quite happily act as a media server, web server, FTP server and ...
