At HP's Connecting Your World event in Berlin last week, HP introduced the world's first affordable color-critical computer display, the HP DreamColor LP2480zx. This new display generates the industry's first combination of true 30-bit color (enabling ...
The DreamColor tag on the HP DreamColor LP2480zx - it appears only in marketing, and not on the monitor itself - comes from a collaboration between HP and SKG Dreamworks movie studio
We're also told that this 24-inch panel displays billions of colours, which may be true, but it's neither useful nor unique. Most high-end panels include 12-bit colour control rather than the HP DreamColor LP2480zx's 10-bit control but your eyes can't ...

At almost £2,000, the HP DreamColor LP2480zx isn€™t exactly a budget 24in monitor, and HP is taking on some tough competition from Eizo and NEC. The wider gamut and extra features give it a technical edge, but considering that a similarly specced ...

Born out of a partnership between HP and Dreamworks SKG, the LP2480zx has a lot of professional backing behind it. We see how well it performs.
High performance, wide gamut ; tilt, swivel and rotate ; robust build, effective OSD, multiple inputs, picture-in-picture
Expensive, stand hardware is slightly wobbly, OS X colour profile isn't accurate, control software doesn't support OS X (but isn't essential)

HP's DreamColor is a dream come true for amateur photographers and wannabe directors. But, boy, does it come at a price…
Stunning image clarity. Huge range of inputs
Not exactly a credit crunch price tag
Superb up-scaling of video, impeccable colours
It's hard to fault this monitor, but it probably could use some more calibration options in its menu system
For colour critical applications, this monitor is ideal. Its colours were vibrant and its black level was perfect.
HP calls the 24in DreamColor LP2480zx 'uniquely affordable'. HP claims that its 30-bit panel can natively produce more than 1 billion colours, which is a heck of a lot more than what a typical desktop monitor can do with a 6-bit or 8-bit panel.
Taste the rainbow. No seriously - stick out your tongue
Super-high resolution; Incredible colour depth; Feels built to last a lifetime
Not for the average joe; Slightly unimpressive contrast ratio
A hugely convenient leap for designers everywhere
You may not immediately think of the words 'Hewlett Packard' as synonymous with cutting-edge LCD monitors, but HP's new LP2480zx has the potential to change all that. Now, before you do a double-take on the pricetag and laugh the poor thing out of...

Natural, vibrant colours without being garish, Large array of inputs, Massive configurability through the OSD
PIP mode not as comprehensive as it could be, Bundled calibration software has poor multi-monitor support

On the software side, HP bundles HP Display Assistant, a rebranding of PortraitDisplay's DisplayTune, also used on ViewSonic's VP2250wb (branded as PerfectSuite Plus). Also included is a set of PDF manuals, and a program called HP Display...
