HP Mini 2140

Solid metal construction ; full ExpressCard/54 slot ; big keyboard

Odd resolution loses a few pixels ; no mobile-broadband options (yet) ; awkward mouse button placement

HP offers a premium version of its plastic Mini 1000 while keeping the price down, making the Mini 2140 the Netbook to beat.

Now that the plastic-clad, Atom-powered consumer version has become a hit, HP's business side is taking another crack at the Netbook market with a radically updated version, the $499 HP Mini 2140. Because it has an aluminum case, like the 2133,...

Odd resolution loses a few pixels; no mobile-broadband options (yet); awkward mouse button placement.

HP offers a premium version of its plastic Mini 1000 while keeping the price down, making the Mini 2140 the Netbook to beat.

Editors' note: The HP Mini 2140 has been replaced by a new model, the HP Mini 5101. Now that the plastic-clad, Atom-powered consumer version has become a hit, HP's business side is taking another crack at the Netbook market with a radically...

HP Mini 2140

By Lisa Gade

What's hot: LED backlit display, metal casing, large keyboard.

Excellent keyboard, fast WiFi draft N with good range and throughput, Bluetooth, easy to upgrade memory and hard drive

Pricier than some netbooks, but you do get what you pay for

caters to those who want little compromise in a tiny package, but at a higher price ($899 to $1,199). The HP Mini 2140 sits in between: it's closer to budget netbooks in size and price but adds key features like an aluminum casing for rigidity and ...

Review: HP Mini 2140 Netbook

By Sal Cangeloso

HP's Mini-Note 2133 was one of the first and most interesting netbooks to be released. HP has made it clear that the device was originally intended for the education market, but it's timing and price point made it an ideal counterpoint to the other ...

HP Mini 2140

By Tryggve

Hewlett Packard throws out the VIA processor and puts in an Atom in the 2140, but keeps the excellent keyboard from the 2133.

Solid Build Quality, Good Battery Life, Excellent Keyboard

Non-standard screen resolution, A bit heavy

Thanks to the large keyboard, the trackpad buttons have been placed on either side of the trackpad instead of below it, which may take some time getting used to. The Mini 2140 feels very solid and durable in its metal casing, but the metal ...

Netbook Review: HP Mini 2140, the 'Mobile Professional'

By Eric Grevstad

But while the 2133's specifications more than stood up to the 7-inch screen and crowded keyboard of the pioneering Asus Eee PC 4G, it was saddled with a sluggish VIA C-7 processor and marketed mostly as a backpack buddy for students in grades K ...

But now HP has gotten around to getting specific: The 10.1-inch-screened Mini 2140 is the company's first netbook aimed specifically at mobile professionals. Externally, this means an aluminum rather than plastic case — plain silver-gray, without the ...

HP Mini 2140

By Christopher null

Third time's a charm? HP tries yet again to crack the netbook market, and its third endeavor is its best entry yet.

ExpressCard and SD media reader slots. Amazing battery life. Exceptional design aesthetics. Loaded with features trickling down from higher-end laptops.

Touchpad too far south; flush design means fingers keep slipping off the bottom. Side-mounted buttons still too awkward for extended use. More expensive than a netbook should be.

Performance and battery life test results updated 1/15, 11:30 a.m. PDT

Premium model features speedy hard drive Rugged design and aluminum frame

Awkwardly placed mouse buttons

The only major downer involves a limited capacity to accommodate external devices. The machine has a few handy ports such as an SDHC flash card reader, VGA-out, an ethernet jack and two USB ports. But the USB ports are located on either side of the ...

HP Mini 2140

By Cisco Cheng

The HP 2133 Mini-Note was (and still is) ahead of its time design-wise, with an aluminum finish that made the original ASUS EeePC 4G look like a toy by comparison. As one of the first netbooks that helped spur the ongoing revolution, it was enticingly ...

Edge-to-edge glass screen. Option for highest resolution on a 10-inch widescreen. Big battery option. Very good battery life from the three-cell battery. 92 percent keyboard. ExpressCard slot

Mouse buttons are adjacent to the touchpad

The HP Mini 2140 offers a larger screen and more advanced parts than its HP 2133 Mini-Note predecessor, while keeping the sexy design intact. But it's pricier than other netbooksfor now.

For the 2140, HP offers what you could call "Accessories Galore!" It's a time-honored method of courting customers, and a good way to differentiate the 2140 from other netbooks. (I'm sure these accessories will eventually be offered across HP's......
