Logitech Z-5 review

By David Carnoy

Logitech's Z-5 PC speakers offer decent sound for a reasonable price ; omnidirectional acoustics ; USB connectivity obviates need for bulky power adapter ; compatible with Mac and Windows PCs ; included remote allows you to control playback of music ...

Little light on the bass ; no volume control on speakers themselves

While we weren't blown away by their sound, the Logitech Z-5s' combination of a simple, clean design, USB connectivity, and some basic remote operation make them a decent value in the sub-$100 PC speaker space.

A couple of years ago Logitech brought out the Z-10s, an interesting set of PC speakers that featured USB connectivity and a digital readout on the front of one of the speakers. Now the company is serving up the Z-5s, which don't feature the fancy...

If we had a nickel for every pair of speakers that come over the transom, we'd all have better tans, and Mac|Life would be coming to you from an exotic isle in the South Pacific.

USB-Powered. Stereo mini-jack input for use with external audio source. Omnidirectional sound. Remote control

Must install software to enable one-touch iTunes access from remote. No included input cable

Logitech's Z-5 USB speakers are a convenient and compact way to rock the party on your desktop or in your spare bedroom.

The bargain-priced Logitech Z-5 speaker set delivers crisp highs and comes with a remote that lets you control your music library. Just don't expect deep bass.

Quality audio performance for price. Extra drivers add space to stereo field. Remote controls iTunes and Windows Media Player.

Not a lot of bass response. Grilles attract dust and smudges.

Logitech's Z-5 defies expectations, delivering not only quality audio for the price ($99.99 direct), but a software and remote-control combo that controls your music library—even iTunes—after a painless setup. All Shots The Z-5 is a stereo PC...

Logitech Z-5

Project sound both forward and backward, remote control

Bass and mid-range get bloated and distorted at times, some harshness in the highs, no AC power

A basic set of PC speakers with a few quirks, the Logitech Z-5s operate entirely via USB, which means you need a PC to use them. The audio quality is adequate but nothing special.

Logitech makes the enticing claim that its Z-5 speakers provide omnidirectional audio, and the speakers' small form factor makes them attractive for users with under-sized desks. At first glance you could be mistaken for thinking the Z-5s project...

If you use your MacBook or MacBook Pro mostly at home, you may be interested in a set of quality speakers. We take a look at the Logitech Z-5s to see how well they perform.

Compact design, easy to move around with a laptop, good sound quality

Relatively modest volume, no separate subwoofer

Logitech's Z-5 speakers aren't exactly portable, but they're designed for people who use a laptop computer at home and may want to move the laptop around from time to time.

Logitech - Z-5

The name might sound like that of a BMW, but the Z-5s are actually a pair of omni-directional speakers from Logitech. Omni-what now? Of course, omni-directional means that noise is sent in every direction. The Z-5 ...

Logitech's omni-directional technology might not seem massively useful in a desktop speaker environment, but it does actually lend an extra dimension to the sound coming from your PC (particularly with games and movies). The fact that they're USB ...
