Avoid doing business with Whynter

I bought this item and noticed that my unit was drawing ~1100W/10.5A rather than the rated 950W/8.4A (using a lknown-accurate P4460 Electricity Usage Monitor). Following up with Whynter has been and still is a nightmare. Their communication and...

Specs (especially efficiency) and relative price.

Specifications that (in my experience) are not even close to lived up to; deplorable customer service.

Decent AC

I have to start it while it's still cool in the room to keep the peak temp in the room under 80 during the day. The unit just can't keep up otherwise. I'd get a more powerful unit for 400 sq ft.

Blows cold air and a fair amount of condensation makes it out the exhaust tube.

The unit is quite noisy. Perhaps my biggest gripe is how often it overfills with condensation. On dry days you can leave it going and not worry about it. Humid days will result in it needing to be emptied every hour. Doesn't seem as powerful as a...

nice

worth all the cons. read directions, exhaust as close to window as possible - with no kinks.

102 outside - 70 inside in a medium puter room. very nice

heavy, loud, water drain tube

Update:

The "vacuum" con isn't particular to this mode. Any standing, in-room A/C with a single vent hose will have this problem. I'm ready to go back to using a window unit...

powerful; much easier to move than a similar-btu window unit; lcd temp control

Creates a vacuum. Air exhausted via the hose is taken from the room. Hence, either (1) your room is air-tight and (I assume) exhaust is poor, or (2) (what happened to us) air is drawn in from the outside and neighboring rooms, reducing the A/C's...

Very Good Room A/C

Blows very cold air; portable; digital temp control; easy to set up; cools our 150 s.f. bedroom pretty quickly

temp setting is weird---it cools to 5 degrees higher than the chosen temp; vent tube gets very warm---best if A/C unit is next to a window

Mum likes it

This is a great unit for a great price and as usual, Newegg had it there in three days.

My mother lives in a seniors apartment in PA which does not have central air, I bought this for her as the weather was heating up. So far, she likes it just fine. It cools her living room down nicely.

Not very portable to an 81 year old woman. Evaporation hose had to be clamped to drain pan as it was popping off and getting floor wet.

Whynter ARC-12D SNO 12000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner Silver - Retail

Good price - the cheapest 12,000 BTU portable A/C unit on Newegg. I've had it for ~6 weeks and I have multiple computers running all the time in my room which typically makes my room about 7-10 degrees warmer than it is outside by mid/late afternoon....

No cons, except that you have to hook the vent up to an outside window or something ; but that is a requirement of all portable A/C units

GOOD UNIT POOR CONDENSATION COLLECTOR

If you have a way to hook a hose to this that you can put into a drain or through an external wall it will be great. However, if you need to rely on the little condensation pan..well good luck.

For an upright unit it is terrific as far as cooling! Cools the room quickly and rather efficiently. Great product if you can set it up for continuous drainage.

There is not an internal condensation bucket or bin like most uprights. There is a small hose to run to a drain or then include a little pan to sit on the ground. There is not an overflow alert or anything of the such for this condensation bucket like...

Well built machine

Very pleased with this product.

Looks close enough to brushed steel but it isn't.
