Eton Rukus XL review

Extra loud. Extra solar. Extra awesome.” That's Eton's banner for the Rukus XL solar-powered Bluetooth speaker (available at $200). It's not exactly Shakespeare, but it gets the point across. This star-fueled stereo wasn't designed to replace your...

Clear, balanced sound ; Powerful max volume ; Solar power works as advertised ; Conversation starter ; Affordable

Bluetooth keeps devices on a short leash ; Lowest bass response underwhelming

If you’re looking for an affordable new way to impress your social circle and keep the party going strong, Eton’s Ruckus XL is an excellent choice.

Eton Rukus Solar

The Eton Rukus Solar is a Bluetooth speaker crossed with a solar charger that delivers good, if quiet, audio quality and consistent power for your mobile devices, but the frequent signal drops are a nuisance.

Charges in the sun. Can charge other devices. Clear audio without distortion

Etón Rukus Solar

As far as we're concerned, everyone's preparedness kit ought to have one of Eton's products in it. The company builds some impressively rugged and useful gear, including its practical American Red Cross line of hand-cranked and solar-powered shortwave...

Sensitive/efficient solar panel charges itself and mobile devices quickly ; Sounds great outdoors ; E Ink display always legible, even in bright sun ; Convenient carrying pouch shades mobile devices ; Light and easily portable

Lean on bass, even with bass boost ; Sounds gritty at max volume ; Solar panel scratches easily

This isn’t an audiophile-grade product and it isn’t going to throw down the jams at your next raging party. But, for the passive listener, we can think of no more suitable passive outdoor speaker.

Eton Rukus XL Bluetooth Wireless Speaker

We're not usually excited by solar charging accessories specifically because of their sun-soaking capabilities, but Eton's new speaker system Rukus XL ($200) is interesting -- a modest re-engineering of the previously-released Soulra XL, now with a...
