Sonos Play:1 review

For the last few years, Sonos has been a leader in hi-fi wireless audio thanks to popular devices like its Play:3 and Play:5 wireless speakers. Using a hardwired connection from a router as a piggy back, Sonos' proprietary wireless ecosystem allows for...

Clean, smooth upper register ; Good detail and dynamic expression ; Packed to the gills in features ; Excellent wireless signal ; Solid bass response for the size

Mono speaker can lose fidelity ; Midrange a tad cloudy

The baby of the Sonos family wedges its way into a highly competitive price point, while still serving up the full Sonos wireless experience.

Sonos Play:1 (black)

Sonos has long been the best wireless audio solution, but recommending its pricey products always ended with a similar caveat: "if you can afford it."

The Sonos Play:1 is a stylish and exceptionally well-made wireless speaker, especially for the price. It offers the full Sonos experience, with support for most key services (including Spotify, Pandora, Rdio) and super-reliable wireless streaming....

Unlike Bluetooth speakers, the Sonos system can't stream from every app on your phone or tablet -- so there's no support for iTunes Radio, for instance. The lack of a built-in battery limits room-to-room mobility.

The Sonos Play:1 finally brings the company's wireless audio magic to the masses, in a fantastically designed compact speaker that's just $199.

Sonos PLAY:1 Review

Once upon a time, Sonos was a tough sell. Whole-house streaming audio had its appeal, certainly, but it was also expensive. The wireless audio market has come on strong since the first Sonos all-in-one speaker, the PLAY:5, in 2009 though, and with...

Even with a battery missing, though, we’d still lean toward Sonos for a whole-home audio system. The PLAY:1′s simplicity, performance, and blend-into-the-background convenience epitomizes why: the tech drops out of the way and leaves you to enjoy the...

Review: Sonos Play:1

Small but powerful addition to the Play lineup

Great sound ; Stylish build ; Easy setup ; Humidity-resistant

iOS app interface could use iOS 7 makeover ; Audio playback is limited to Sonos-supported services

Improvements in wireless technology over the years has made it increasingly easier to offer music playback in every room of the home. Involved in this music everywhere movement since 2002, Sonos has long prided itself on providing customers with audi

"Better entry level speaker than the Play:3"

The Play:1 is great for people who already have a Sonos system in their house but feel that the Play:3 is big and expensive as an entry lever speaker. The Play:3 is overkill for small rooms, but the Play:1 is perfect. I have written a small comparison...

- Small size

- Not really portable

"Room-filling sound in a wife-approved form factor"

As a bit of an audiophile I've got more speakers than I could ever listen to at once, and most of them take up quite a bit of space. Of course, I've always justified the real estate to my wife by demonstrating how great the sound is, because better...

Great sound, easily fills small rooms, and plays all music well

Not portable, but not a big issue for me.

Great way to bring music to the whole house

The Sonos system gave us everything we wanted. It was very easy to set up and it is very easy to use. We now have music at the touch of a button throughout the house. The only issue we have found is that if you use a phone as a control, the battery...

Easy to set up, easy to use

Drains the phone battery
