TDK's Massive Boombox Is a Retro Relic Reborn

Rock the block with this three-speaker, portable party machine from the old-school cassette kings. It's bigger than hip-hop!

USB, RCA, and 3.5-mm inputs pull audio from just about anything. Durable carbon-fiber speaker cones. Rubberized storage tray keeps gadgets secure. Integrated guitar input

Mobility costs 12 D-cell batteries, pushing the weight up to a Lloyd Dobler-crushing 30 pounds. Low-rent antenna and lack of wireless functionality are unacceptable at this price

TDK 3 Speaker Boombox

TDK hasn't been in the picture much lately, but it's trying to make a splash in the iPod speaker dock scene with the massive, $499.95 (list) 3 Speaker Boombox. Strictly speaking, it isn't an iPod dock, but it comes close—there's no built-in docking...

Visually striking design. Serious bass at high volumes. Can be used as an amp for instruments. AM/FM radio. It goes to 11 (really)

Distortion issues at random volumes. Portable, but only if you want to haul 26 pounds and feed the Boombox 12 (!) D batteries

There's no denying the massive TDK 3 Speaker Boombox looks good—and it often sounds very good, too—but it isn't without issues, and at 26 pounds, it's not all that portable.

Definitley Worth It!

This thing sounds great and its beautiful to boot. I wasn\'t sure if I was going to keep it at first. But after I tested it out and showed it off to my friends I was in love. Not a very practical purchase but definitley a very solid piece of equipment....

A classy and remarkably well-made unit, that puts style before performance

TDK 3 Speaker Boombox

Looking like an old-school boom-box this box of tricks is dripping with modern features. The design influences are worn so clearly all over the TDK 3 Speaker Boombox it's virtually impossible not to end up with a huge smile on your face. You either...

The styling is retro but the materials are modern with touch-sensitive buttons supplementing the two LED infused dials. There is even a small LED control panel and 5-preset AM/FM radio for when your own music isn’t enough

We’re not too impressed with the lack of covers for the speakers, either, so you really won’t want to take it outside. That said, it has the most ludicrous carrying handle of any speaker system ever but the TDK 3 Speaker Boombox is intended to be...

If they remade ‘The Fresh Prince of Bell-Air’ Will Smith would say ‘smell you later’ to the cab driver with the TDK 3 Speaker Boombox on his shoulder (or more than likely held by two of his minders). With plenty of boom to shake, shake the room, this...

Boom it's loud

This is a very solid piece of kit, and therefore is rather heavy. the promo picture of a man carrying it on his shoulder is totally unrealistic. if you're looking for a portable system you might be better off going for the TDK2 which is smaller and...

Only plays one album at a time!

Looks good and sounds good, but you should be aware of a serious firmware flaw. Playing from USB only allows you to play one folder - then the machine stops. So, for most of us, that's one album only - no setting up lists of favourite albums / extracts...

An amazing speaker, or 3, expensive though

First of all I did not get this from amazon, rather my local HMV, it was £250, and because the last one they had was a display model, it was 20% off, pretty good deal! I would look to get it cheaper than the price on amazon.

Incredible Design! Great Sound!

I was looking for an 'old-school boombox' ipod dock that would fit the overall decoration of my new apartment and deliver high-fidelity sound. I came across a review for this product and instantly fell in love with its retro-futuristic design. I...
