close focus is superb

These binoculars are slightly larger than they would be if they didn't provide close focus, but the close focus does indeed work as advertised and the image is sharp and bright at all distances. It's amazing they will focus as close as they do. They...

Excellent quality, could be priced lower

This is an excellent piece of equipment, when compared to heir counterparts at $100 or lower. Good amplification, excelent clarity, wide angle, in general a much better performance. At a 20% premium over the competition it would be an awesome purchase;...

Very good optics, versatile in use and a great price.

Very good optics, versatile in use and a great price.

I was a bit hesitant to buy these as I've seen so many budget, small aperture binoculars that weren't worth their low price, but these things are great. We used them on a trip to Costa Rica and loved their versatility. While you shouldn't expect the...

Pentax Papilio Binoculars

Excellent update to a fine product

This magnification is easier to hand-hold than the 8X, and the close focus opens up a new world. Great update to the previous similar model, which I enjoyed for many years until it was stolen.

An indispensable pair of binoculars to add to your collection

An indispensable pair of binoculars to add to your collection

If you are a serious observer of nature you will probably want to own more than one pair of binoculars. Hunters have more than one rifle, musicians have more than one instrument and birders (and other naturalists) should have not only a back-up pair...

More useful than standard binoculars because of close focus. While watching actors on stage, have fun seeing what people are text messaging several rows away. See the flower up close when it is high on the bush. Read the channel guide atop the TV in...

Product Specifications

The PENTAX Papilio Series incorporate a mechanism that automatically compensates for the misalignment of right and left image fields at close ranges, facilitating the observation of insects in the field and exhibits at galleries and museums. The series is called Papilio, the Latin word for butterfly, because it was specifically developed to satisfy user demands for close-range observation of butterflies and other insects.
