Sony BDP-S590

The Sony BDP-S590 is a good Blu-ray player, but a few minor quirks hold it back.

The BDT220 is pretty speedy, averaging 24.8 seconds to load a non-BD-Live disc (Ralph Bakshi's Wizards), and 22.3 seconds for a BD-Live disc (The Sound of Music 45th Anniversary Edition).

Philips has created a thing of beauty with its 7 Series 3D Blu-ray deck. Finished in a greyish-silver and sporting a sculpted lip with illuminated soft-touch buttons, it's a real step up from the humdrum.

Excellent quality pictures in both 2D & 3D when paired with new Philips Ultra HD 40inch set. Only downside slow to respond to remote commands. Maybe I'm just impatient?

This machine suddenly reverts your 3D Blu-Ray DVD to 2D half way through a movie. You then have to stop the machine, reboot and start again! Frustratingly, I then used their manual to see if I could run a firmware update only to find that one was not...

Works Great. Does not come with WIFI attachments so you will have to purchase additional equipment. Aside from that it works like a charm and I have had it for over 2 years now

LG LAB540 SoundPlate

LG hasn't skimped on the 3D Blu-ray player inside the SoundPlate. Sound quality is serious too, and it's plenty smart enough when it comes to apps. It would benefit from an extra HDMI input or two, and a few more UK-centric apps.

A basic, non-3D-capable Blu-ray player isn't that exciting, granted, but the BDP-S390's breathtaking picture, very decent sound and fine streaming give it plenty of appeal, as does its price. If you don't already own a Blu-ray player, you should now....
