DMP-BD55K

The Panasonic DMP-BD55K costs a bundle, but it delivers top-grade image quality for the price.

Plays back DivX and AVCHD video ; Gorgeous image quality

No built-in memory for BD-Live ; Remote not backlit ; display doesn't show time

If you're willing to pay a lot for a Blu-ray player, you deserve one as good as the Panasonic DMP-BD55K

Panasonic DMP-BD55

Editors' note (March 30, 2009) : The rating of this player has been changed since its initial publication to reflect changes in the marketplace. The Panasonic DMP-BD55 has been replaced with the newer Panasonic DMP-BD80

Excellent image quality on Blu-ray Discs; Profile 2.0 compliant; onboard decoding for all high-resolution soundtrack formats, plus bit stream output; 7.1 analog-audio outputs.

PlayStation 3 offers much more functionality and faster navigation for the same price.

The Panasonic DMP-BD55 is the best standalone Blu-ray we've tested and it's a good choice for those with older receivers, but most people will get the same performance out of the cheaper DMP-BD35.

Review: Panasonic DMP-BD55K Blu-ray player

Its superb image quality, excellent design, and wide feature set make the DMP-BD55K a tempting Blu-ray choice.

Plays back DivX and AVCHD video. gorgeous image quality

Display doesn't show time ; Remote not backlit ; No built-in memory for BD-Live

The DMP-BD55K had no issues with upscaling standard-definition DVDs to 1080p. In fact, the DMP-BD55K bested all comers we've tested in its handling of DVDs

TESTED: Panasonic DMP-BD55 Blu-ray player

User Interface The DMP-BD55 provides a reasonably clear onscreen user interface that will help you navigate though some—though definitely not all—set-up tasks without having to rely upon the manual. But regarding the interface, I do have two specific...

Despite a user interface and setup menus that are trickier to use than they should be, Panasonic’s DMP-BD55 offers strong video performance and unexpectedly refined analog audio performance. This little player may look modest, but it offers tons of...

Panasonic DMP-BD55 Blu-ray Player

FeaturesLike the PS3 and the previous-generation DMP-BD50, the BD55 can decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio to PCM for output via HDMI to an AVR or pre/pro. Additionally, the BD55 offers 192kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog audio converters to...

Panasonic DMP-BD55 Blu-ray Player Reviewed

At CEDIA 2008, Panasonic showed off two new Blu-ray players, the DMP-BD35 ($300) and the step-up DMP-BD55 ($400). Both players are Profile 2.0, which means they support BonusView/picture-in-picture content and BD-Live Web functionality, and both sport...

What To Buy Now?

Crutchfield informed me that the DMP-55K is being replaced sometime in late April by the DMP-80 model which will still allow you to hook it up to older receivers without the HDMI input. The Panasonic DMP-60 model in essence is the DMP-BD35 model...

A model finally arrived that had me ready to dip into my savings and buy this week. The one star is basically for Panasonic discontinuing it so suddenly without warning and right after being named best player at 2009 CES. That's really peculiar

The player (DMP-55K) as I have been told by Crutchfield and Panasonic themselves is no longer being sold anywhere in my area has been discontinued. Great, I'm ready to finally buy a standalone blu ray player and the model is discontinued

Product Specifications

The DMP-BD55 features technology that reproduces movies with colors that are exceptionally faithful to the original. With PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus, users viewing content on Blu-ray discs enjoy crisp, vivid colors that are extremely close to the original. A high-precision 4:4:4 function creates video signals in which each pixel of the signal from the Blu-ray disc is color-compensated, so when the BD55 is connected to a Panasonic Viear HDTV, the colors are even sharper and more vivid. The DMP-BD55 also excels in sound quality. The DMP-BD55 features an HD audio decoder, which supports the 7.1-channel surround sound adopted in Blu-ray discs. Users can enjoy 7.1-channel surround even with systems that do not support HD audio - as long as the DMP-BD55 is connected to a 7.1-channel receiver equipped with an HDMI terminal. The Panasonic BD55 goes a step further with a high-end audio design and components. Thanks to a 192 kHz 24 bit audio digital-analog converter and high quality insulators, electrolytic capacitors, copper-foil film capacitors and ultra-low-impedance electrolytic capacitors, the DMP-BD55 delivers the same kind of exciting surround effect and lifelike ambience as today's finest cinemas. The DMP-BD55 can also output analog signals for 7.1-channel sound, so even receivers that are not compatible with HDMI can produce the 7.1-channel surround sound by simply connecting to the DMP-BD55. The BD55 features BD-Live compatibility which enables users to connect to the Internet to download images, subtitles and other data, and take part in interactive activities and multi-player games linked to bonus cinema content found on Blu-ray discs. The BD55 is equipped with an SD memory card slot that makes it easy to transfer images from an HD camcorder or digital still camera that uses SD memory cards. Simply insert the SD card into the DMP-BD55 and it plays AVCHD-format video images or JPEG stills in full 1920 x 1080 resolution on your flat panel HDTV. The DMP-BD55 can also play slide shows, complete with background music.
