Panasonic DMR-BW880 Blu-ray recorder review

For DIY recording in HD, you can't beat a Blu-ray recorder

User friendly ; Versatile ; Quality BD-R recordings ; Remote control

Dated looking GUI ; Adverts within EPG ; No CI slot

DLNA server capability, cheaper than DMR-BW850

Still expensive, could use more Internet features

The Panasonic DMR-BW880 has almost every feature you could hope for in a media player. The 500GB hard drive can store plenty of compressed video recordings (which can also be copied to Blu-ray), its network support allows Internet features and media...

Panasonic DMR-BW880

The BW880 has two Scart sockets, but we can't think why you'd want to use them

User friendly ; Versatile ; Quality BD-R recordings ; Remote control

Dated looking GUI ; Adverts within EPG ; No CI slot

Clearly, the DMR-BW880 won't be everyone's cup of tea, and it bears a price tag commensurate with its early adopter status. But if Blu-ray archive recording from Freeview HD is your bag, this is a highly accomplished machine that comfortably delivers...

It's not often we see a product as complex as this Panasonic Blu-ray recorder. Roll up your sleeves – we're going in…

If you value what it can do and are prepared to pay the price, then go for it. It isn't ideal for first-time buyers, though

Panasonic DMR-BW880 review

The Panasonic DMR-BW880 is a Blu-ray disc recorder with a 500GB internal hard drive and twin high-definition digital television tuners. It builds upon the older Panasonic DMR-BW850, adding DLNA media sharing over a home network, but we would have liked...

Panasonic DMR-BW880 review

The Panasonic DMR-BW880 is a superb piece of kit. If you want a Freeview HD recorder with ample storage capacity, and the ability to play and record to Blu-ray discs, then we can't think of a machine more worthy of your attention. Just try and get it...

Plenty of storage capacity ; Fantastic Blu-ray player ; Easy to use ; Stylish ; Network-sharing capability

You'll have to sell a major organ to pay for it

Conclusion The Panasonic DMR-BW880 is excellent, but very expensive. If you can pick one up for cheap, we'd recommend buying it. If you can't, you might like to wait a while before purchasing one, to see if the price drops at all. If you do decide to...

Panasonic DMR-BW880

The Panasonic DMR-BW880 is a Blu-ray player and recorder that also packs in Freeview HD.

The Panasonic DMR-BW880 big selling point is just how fully equipped it is. As well as delivering crystal-clear Blu-ray images, it'll also deliver your Freeview HD to your HDTV too

The web TV skills aren’t massively impressive yet – there's YouTube and that's about it

In all, this is a great piece of convergence kit and a glimpse at what set-top boxes might become. Look out for internet deals on the price.

Panasonic DMR-BW880 review: PS3 beater?

The Panasonic DMR-BW880 is one singing, dancing, multitasking set top box. But at £799, it's also a lot to ask when the similarly skilled Sony PS3 may be sitting underneath your telly already, and costs so much less. Which one's for you? Read on and...

Has twin Freeview HD tuners and a huge hard drive

Costs three times as much as a PS3

For gamers, a PS3 and a cheaper Freeview HD PVR is a better solution
