Say 'yes' to a high-end Blu-ray player that says 'no' to BD Live

Excellent sound quality ; 7.1 channel analogue outputs

No Ethernet port for BD Live ; No onboard DTS HD MA decoding via analogue

The BDP-LX71 screams quality and at £600 we should hope so, too. It's an excellent player with superb picture and sound quality. It has wonderfully simple menu systems that are a breeze to configure and we love the connectivity options. If money is no...

Picture and sound quality ; Styling is symmetrical and lovely ; Great selection of outputs including 7.1 audio

It's quite big ; Expensive ; No internal DTS-HD decoding, only pass-through

If you can get this for a good price, go for it. Otherwise, we seriously love the Panasonic DMP-BD35 and suspect the BD50 will be top of its class. We also like the PS3, which is half the price and loads interactive content over twice as fast, although...

If you want the very best Blu-ray performance look no further than the BDP-LX71.

If you're serious about movies and want the very best Blu-ray performance, then look no further than the BDP-LX71. Its image quality is the best we've seen so far, beating even the best decks from Panasonic and Sony and leaving you in no doubt as to...

Pioneer's latest Blu-ray deck is promising to take hi-def video to new heights. But how does it fare in the test lab?

Raises the bar for Blu-ray decks and worth its hefty price tag if you want the best

The BDP-LX71 lacks the versatility of some of its competitors but it's in a different league when it comes to picture and sound quality

Superb looks and solid build quality ; rich, detailed picture ; excellent sound performance

Not the smoothest of operators ; no onboard DTS-HD Master Audio decoding ; not Profile 2.0

The Pioneer LX71 is a great Blu-ray player, despite a slow loading speed for interactive discs and the high price.

Picture and sound quality ; Styling is symmetrical and lovely ; Great selection of outputs including 7.1 audio

It's quite big ; Expensive ; Only Profile 1.1 ; No internal DTS-HD decoding (yet)

If you can get this for a good price, go for it. Otherwise, we seriously love the Panasonic DMP-BD35 and suspect the BD50 will be top of its class. We also like the PS3, which is half the price and loads interactive content over twice as fast, although...

Pioneer BDP-LX71

The heavyweight Pioneer BDP-LX71 costs big bucks (over half a grand), but that's because it's one of the best Blu-ray players around capable of squirting out the full range of DVD formats, DivX and AVC-HD and upscaling to 1080p!

Stylish touchscreen mobile at an equally stylish price

It's lacking Wi-Fi, 3G, DivX and XviD playback

This would be our "money no object" choice. Unfortunately, times are tight. Still, the Pioneer BDP-LX71 produces some of the best video and audio around.

The Pioneer BDP-LX71 is a Profile 1.1 Blu-ray player (1080p, 24fps) capable of playing the full range of DVD formats, DivX and AVC-HD. Up-scales to 1080p, progressive scan, digital filters, pixel scaler and deep colour. The good What's a Blu-ray player...

Treat your DVDs to this powerhouse of a Pioneer and they will worship you as a deity, leaving tiny offerings of deleted scenes and directors’ commentaries by your bed each night. And verily shall they tremble before your mighty remote control! Pioneer...

Very well built player, outputting some excellent pictures as well as sound.

Beautiful picture (1080/24P) ; HDMI 1.3a (for digtal bitstream of True HD & Master Audio) ; 12 bit Deep Colour capable ; Solid quality build ; BonusView (Profile 1.1)

Quite expensive ; No BD-Live (not really a problem at this stage)
