Sony BDP-S1 Blu-ray Disc Player: Short Take

HD DVD had, on the other hand, launched with two Toshiba players with considerable ergonomic issues. These first-gen players are still afflicted with slow startup times and disc access, and playback glitches that would embarrass a $79 DVD player. But...

Sony BDP-S1 Blu-ray Disc Player: First Look

Sony's BD player is now due several months after the Blu-ray format's introduction, and while we certainly hope it's worth the wait, it appears to have some baffling omissions. There is no Ethernet connection, it won't playback CDs, and as of now won't...

Sony BDP-S1E

Excellent image quality with true high-definition 1080p Blu-ray playback, great DVD upscaling, beautiful design, quick and easy to use

Some features will require new displays to function, occasional bug with menus

This is the product to watch for Blu-ray enthusiasts. It's not cheap, but the exceptional quality of its features and functionality easily justify its price.

Sony BDP-S1E review

In many ways, the Sony BDP-S1E is a perfect snapshot of the current state of Blu-ray play. On the one hand, it shows to breathtaking effect just what awesome audio and especially video treats Blu-ray can deliver. But on the other hand, there are just...

Marvellous picture quality ; Sturdy build ; 1080p/24 support ; Good audio

Not compatible with BD Profile 1.1 ; No HDMI 1.3 input ; Slow to load discs ; Full of operational glitches

Conclusion Yes, the Sony BDP-S1E delivers sublime Blu-ray picture quality. Yes, it's got a few 'premium' features. Yes, it sounds great, too. But the twin problems of it already being out-of-date thanks to its lack of Profile 1.1 support and its...
