Five Blu

Sony's BDP-S300 Blu-ray Disc (BD) Player delivers admirable picture and sound quality, and, as with many BD players, it can upconvert regular DVD movies to 1080p format. It can also play back multimedia files recorded onto relatively spacious (and...

Plays JPEG and MP3 files on DVDs. Supports 24-Hz output with Blu-ray movies. Provides basic picture control settings and presets.

Slow disc load times with some Blu-ray movies. No 24-Hz output with DVD video. No bitstream audio output (HDMI).

Sony's least-expensive Blu-ray Disc player isn't a speed demon, but it delivers solid detail and a pleasing viewing experience.

Sony BDP-S300

Editors' Note, October 10, 2008: Since this review was published, Sony has released a firmware update that adds Dolby TrueHD decoding and is said to offer improved BD Java compatibility. CNET did not have the opportunity to re-test this model with the...

Excellent picture quality on Blu-ray and DVD; DVD upconversion up to 1080p; HDMI output.

Slow load times, particularly unbearable on newer BD Java discs like Pirates of the Caribbean ; some minor video performance issues; no Ethernet port for firmware upgrades.

The BDP-S300 is a decent choice if you're limiting yourself to a relatively cheap, standard-design Blu-ray player, but everyone else should consider the competition.

Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray Player Review

While the Sony BDP-S300 is an entry level Blu-ray player, entry level doesn't necessarily mean cheap. At $500, you're getting a capable high definition video player and that's about it. The unconversion ability of standard DVD's is lackluster at best...

Price - one of the lowest on the market ; Easy setup

NO DOLBY TrueHD OR DTS HD DECODING ; Long startup time ; Unresponsive remote and interface ; Lackluster upconversion ability ; No SACD support

Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray Player Reviewed

The $399.99 BDP-S300 was Sony's first "entry-level" Blu-ray offering, released in mid-2007. This is a Profile 1.0 player, which means it does not have the secondary audio and video decoders needed for picture-in-picture playback, nor does it offer...

Review: Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray Disc Player

If there's one question I get more than any other these days, it's this: "Are those new high def DVD players affordable yet?" "Affordable" is a subjective term if ever there was one, but the short answer is yes, affordable HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc...

Although it's nothing to write home about as a standard DVD player, the BDP-S300 certainly has what it takes to deliver a superb Blu-ray experience. Unfortunately, with the same price tag as a PS3 - also from Sony - comparisons are inevitable. With...

Sony BDP-S300 Blu-Ray Player Review

This is a unit that we would buy for ourselves if it weren't for the fact that we couldn't make it region free, because we have a huge DVD collection with movies from regions 1 and 4. If you are going to play only region-free (“region 0”) or region 1...

Sony BDP-S300 Review and Prices

The first thing you will notice about the BDP-S300, Sony's second generation Blu-Ray DVD player, is that the list price is substantially lower than the first generation model. The Sony BDP-S300 is obviously still much more expensive than most standard...

Excellent picture quality, inexpensive for a Blu-ray player, offers HDMI upscaling to 1080p

Slow load times, lacks onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD

Sony BDP-S300, Samsung BD-P1200, and Panasonic DMP-BD10A Blu-ray Players

Hot on the heels of the first, and almost universally lame, generation of Blu-ray players, here's generation II. In the case of two of these players, the big news is a substantial reduction in price. Both are less than half of their predecessors. In...

Sony BDP-S300

It seems Sony has come up with a winner in the battle to build a less-expensive Blu-ray player. Other than the maddeningly slow menu navigation and one-time near-crash, the BDP-S300 performed beautifully, and it has a nice feature set. Perhaps most...

Ultimate AV: Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray Player

While the PS3 remains a top-notch Blu-ray player with video game capability thrown in as an extra feature (do I hear groans from Sony marketing?), there are plenty of us who would rather have a dedicated BD player in the house than a game console. The...

Superb playback of Blu-ray Discs, Good upconversion of standard definition DVDs from the HDMI output, Affordably priced

Sluggish disc loading, though competitive with most current Blu-ray players, Will not decode Dolby TrueHD, Will not properly play the advanced extra features and games on some discs, Occasional freeze-ups
