Sony BDP-S5100 3D Blu-ray Disc Player with Super Wi-Fi review: Sony's Blu-ray player is one of the best

While not the last disc format that will ever be made -- 4K Blu-ray is almost here -- the humble 1080p Blu-ray is probably the last you'll actually need. Now is a good time to buy a player if you don't already have one: the hardware is cheap and...

The Sony BDP-S5100 3D Blu-ray Disc Player with Super Wi-Fi is a compact powerhouse with a wide variety of streaming services; image quality is mostly excellent, even with streaming content; good upscaling of DVDs.

The disk drawer seems flimsy; DLNA streaming isn't as slick as you get from some competitors; 3:2 pull-down performance isn't as smooth as on the Panasonic BDT230; Super Wi-Fi didn't provide better streaming in our tests; no analog outputs.

The Sony BDP-S5100 Blu-ray player offers a wealth of services and very good image quality for the money.

Sony BDP-S5100 Blu-ray Player

Sony didn't go back and reinvent the Blu-ray player with the BDP-S5100. They stuck with their successful formula and have what is a minor upgrade to the BDP-S590 from last year. The new design certainly looks nice, though I do have a couple of...

Sony BDP-S5100

Sony's impressive Blu-ray deck boasts superb features and sublime pictures

Sublime HD pictures ; Slick operating system ; Excellent feature list

No DivX support and won't stream MKV ; No 4K upscaling or second HDMI ; Needs more catch-up TV apps

There’s a single HDMI v1.4 output – two would have been nice at this price, but that’s reserved for the S790. It’s joined by a coaxial digital audio output, Ethernet port and a second USB port. On cheaper models the latter would be used to connect a...

Sony BDP-S5100 review

A good Blu-ray player with good online services, but we think it's a little expensive

At £140, the BDP-S5100 is a reasonably priced Blu-ray player with plenty of features. It doesn't have much in the way of user-customisable settings and the list of online services could be larger, but it looks great and is easy to use. However, the...

Sony BDP-S5100

Best Blu-ray player £100-£150, Awards 2013. Thanks to the great picture and awesome sound quality, Sony's BDP-S5100 is a top budget buy

Clean, sharp images ; Impressive detail in dark scenes ; Punchy colours ; Nice to use ; Eye-catching design

Nothing of note

If the BDP-S5100 is any indication of what’s to come, 2013 could be a bumper year for Sony’s Blu-ray players. This has all the hallmarks of a class-leading machine.

"Buggy Firmware / Features dont work / Noisy when playing DVD"

Bought this for my 3D Tv after reading reviews. Got it on sale for just over $100, but this Chinese junk should have been more like $20. To be fair, it works great as a 3D Bluray player, but fails on everything else. The streaming features are buggy...

"It works when it works"

I will be taking this back. It is hard to find electronics that work anymore even from sony.

This player works well when it works. It plays netflix well.

It is agonizingly slow. You will sit there and wait for netflix to load. It also locks up a lot. Also I use an external usb player for movies. Many times when I try to watch a movie it will say "no available video'. It has done this two times today.

"More difficult than reviews have stated."

Bought this 2 weeks ago to play streaming videos from Amazon and Netflix when my grand daughter came for vacation. They have been here and gone and I still cannot log into Netflix! One reviewer who had the same problem said it requires an additional...

None for me so far. Unable to use.

Two people in my family have had a hassle getting the thing to start. Once started I was VERY upset to learn that it has no on-screen keyboard for entering log-in information in order to use Netflix(or I suppose any other site requiring log in info).

"Best blu-ray player on the market with little quirks"

Multi-featured player with lots of apps. But loading the apps takes a lot of time. I mean, literally, when I click on the app icon, the app loads after 5 to 8 seconds(yes, I timed it). Sometimes, I end up thinking my remote does not have battery. Its...

Availability of variety of apps, including a dedicated browser

Very slow, when loading apps such as netflix and youtube.

"Easy to use"

I would recommend this to a friend or anyone looking for a blu-ray player. It is easy to use, a breeze to set up, and truly not that expensive for a good quality blu-ray system. When you compare it to junk that tends to break down in 6 months, the Sony...

We had a Blu-Ray player before, but it took over a minute to turn on. This one is MUCH faster and easier to use. I have 4 kids, and they already understand the up and down, left and right simplicity. Amazon, Netflix, and discs are a snap to use.

It uses more power when turned off to have fast start on, but it is fully on in less than 5 seconds.
