Panasonic HDC-SD60S (silver)

Is it just me, or are four nearly identical versions of the same product a wee bit much? Panasonic seems to be taking a carpet bomb approach to the entry-level HD camcorder market, with those four models in the slim range between $500 and $700. The...

Manual shutter-speed and iris controls; comfortable size; smarter-than-average autofocus; lens focuses relatively closely; decent battery life

Soft video; cramped, low-resolution touch screen

Panasonic's quartet of entry-level HD camcorders--the HDC-HS60, TM60, TM55, and SD60--delivers a nice manual feature set and good performance, as well as solid video quality for their class. As long as you don't pay list price, the SD60 is a great...

Panasonic HDC-SD60 First Impressions Camcorder Review

Panasonic really went to town updating the internal specs for its new mid-range HD camcorder line. The HDC-SD60 features a larger, 1/4.1-inch CMOS sensor, and it includes a 25x optical zoom lens (up from 16x on last year's models).

Most of Panasonic's updates with the HDC-SD60 took place under the hood. We're very excited to test the camcorder with its new 1/4.1-inch CMOS sensor and we should see some stronger results over last year's models. The HDC-SD20 (the predecessor model...

Panasonic HDC-SD60K

This camcorder is ideal if portability is important to you.

This Panasonic device features face recognition technology

The LCD display screen is small on this HDV camcorder

We liked the Panasonic HDC-SD60K and it offers users a nice, compact size, buttons and controls and gorgeous zoom capabilities. This is a simple HDV camcorder, that will get the job done but with less advanced technology.

Panasonic HDC-SD60 review

Its average photo quality is a shame, but the Panasonic HDC-SD60 still comes highly recommended -- few entry-level camcorders have impressed us so much in terms of both features and video performance.

Compact design ; 25x optical zoom and 35x 'intelligent zoom ; Effective optical image stabiliser ; Excellent video picture quality

Weak photo performance ; No HDMI cable included

So, does the HDC-SD60 justify the extra cash and pocket space compared to all those candybar cams? If portability and price are your highest priority, the truth is, you might be better off with a cheap and cheerful pocket camcorder instead. If, on the...

Panasonic HDC-SD60

Can Panasonic's latest HD camcorder find greater recommendation at the entry level than its predecessors?

Excellent video quality ; Comprehensive range of recording settings

None at this price

Panasonic appears to have finally cracked the lower end of the high definition market. The HDC-SD60 and its siblings don't offer quite the gobsmacking value of Samsung's HMX-R10, but the prices of these models are still extremely good, and their...

Panasonic HDC-SD60 review

Panasonic has decided to give pocket-sized camcorders a hard time. Its HDC-SD60 keeps things small and simple but adds a sackful of features that its more dinky competitors from Kodak, Flip and Sanyo don't always include. The HDC-SD60 is part of a trio...

Panasonic HDC-SD60 review

The SD60 packs lots of impressive features into its petite shell. The lens benefits from Panasonic's superb Power O.I.S. stabilisation system to counteract camera shake, and has a massive 25x zoom range. A so-called Intelligent Zoom function extends...

Competitive picture quality, a great collection of features and a price that should appeal to the masses

Panasonic HDC-SD60

Look closely at Panasonic's impressive new SD60 and you'll discover features you won't find on last year's models. In many respects, the SD60 picks up where the popular SD20 left off. For a start, Panasonic has at last provided a larger 1/4in Cmos...

There's one noticeable omission from the new model: a remote control. This isn't good because it makes it awkward to control the camera when showing off clips on an HDTV when you're slumped in your favourite armchair. That said, if you're importing its...

Product Specifications

The SD60 Series features a 25x optical zoom and an Intelligent Zoom function that goes all the way up to 35x. When using intelligent zoom, Intelligent Resolution technology lets you shoot at high zoom rates while preserving the image resolution. You get sharp images of highly detailed objects - without the blurry edges. Plus, Power O.I.S. suppresses even slight hand-shake, which is a must for extreme zooming, because of its high susceptibility to hand-shake. The 35.7mm wide-angle lens on the SD60 Series fits more people and more of the background into the frame than a conventional 44.1mm lens. This is especially handy when you want to take a group photo in a small room. It fits your subjects in even when you shoot from up close, and makes it possible to pick up even small sounds with the microphone. It also gives you more ways to enjoy your camcorder, like taking self portraits or capturing sweeping landscapes without losing the sense of scale.
