Canon's flash-based high-definition camcorder has lots of manual features

The HF100 is one of the best camcorders in its price range. Offering exceptionally sharp video and an extensive array of manual features, it will suit amateurs and enthusiasts both. However, sticklers for value should pick up the 32-gigabyte HF11...

Stunning high-definition video resolution, unsurpassed image clarity and colour, comes packed with manual features

No inbuilt memory, no memory card in sales package, drab design

Canon HF100 review

The Canon HF100 is an HD camcorder that features a large 1/3.3 CMOS sensor, 3.3 megapixels, four recording modes and image stabilisation that utilises Canon's Super Range Optical system. It doesn't have Flash memory, but do we hold that against it?

The Canon HF100 is brimming with features, including the ability to capture glorious footage in full HD. That’s right, the maximum 1920×1080, making this one of the best mid-sized camcorders on the market. Capture some video and your eyes will marvel...

Not too much to moan about here: the manual focus is tricky to use. Also, there’s no slow-motion shooting mode. That’s it. Nothing more to see. Move along now

Brimming with features and capturing amazing footage, the HF100 is probably the best mid-range camcorder money can buy. It's not bad looking either. Canon HF100 is tagged with Canon, small, AVCHD and camcorder. Select a tag (Canon, for example) to find...

Canon HF100

Cheaper than the HF10, although you need to factor in the cost of storage cards.

At its highest 17Mbps quality setting, the clips recorded with the HF100 are absolutely superb when played back not only on a HDTV display via HDMI but even when displayed using the supplied AV connectors on a 28″ Widescreen CRT monitor, too. Its Dolby...

Good

It is fairly easy to use the basic functions - ie recording and then playing it back. We have also figured out how to play it back on the tv and a digital photoframe. So far a good quality camcorder.

Canon is a good, reputable and trusted brand. It is small and compact, light to carry. We liked the idea of the SD-Card.

The battery life doesn't last too long, it needs to be recharged regularly. I've found that if I use it for say 10 - 15 minutes, then turn it off and put it away for a week or so, when I get it out next it is low on battery and requires recharging...

Canon HF100

Excellent image quality & colour reproduction on my HD tv i.e. no over saturated colours. Far exceeded my expectations. It's so small and light too with a very impressive optical zoom.

Being extremely picky here but the internal microphone is very sensitive to the slightest breeze. You can purchase an external mic but surely that's overkill for most regular amateur users. However it's nice to know the option is there if needed.

Excellent

Best value high-def, flash memory video camera. Comes with only 8G SD-card but larger SD-card prices are falling all the time.

Full 1920x1080 high-definition video, compact-flash storage (no DVD, no tape, no HDD)

AVCHD format isn't widely supported yet, slow downloading high-def video from camera to PC via USB

Canon HF100

Very small and easy to use!

Low light gets a bit grainy, but I imagine that is a problem with all camcorders.
