Canon DC10 Camcorder Review

Canon, the tortoise of the camcorder industry, has finally chosen to enter into the race with the hare. The DC10 and DC20 mark their first foray into the DVD camcorder market, currently dominated by Sony. Their large imager size (1/4” and 1/3.9”,...

Canon DC10

Canon makes some interesting claims about the DC10 DVD camcorder.

Nice features, compact frame

Image quality could be improved, interface a little cluttered

A fairly decent camera that struggles to find a balance between quality and usability

Canon DC10 review

We've yet to test a DVD-based camcorder that offers an uncompromising alternative to tape. Canon's DC10 is a decent effort within its field, but cheaper tape-based camcorders still trump it for image quality

Comparitively small chassis ; Ease of operation

Image quality could be improved

It's difficult to recommend this camcorder over much cheaper, MiniDV models, because the image quality lags so far behind. The appeal of popping a DVD straight out of the camcorder and into a DVD player is as mesmerising as ever, but the format still...

DVD-based camcorders still have a way to go before they can match traditional MiniDV camcorders. Still, compared to other DVD camcorders, the DC10 is a decent offering.

Pretty careless experience

I think it never allows you to start finalizing if the AC is not switched ON, But disconnecting AC while finalizing is bad news. That's time and power consuming process and if it runs out of power before completing, bye bye data... I have shot 100+...

good video quality, nothing more, nothing less

menus a bit too heavy to work with

Excellent camera for the price, but pick your media CAREFULLY!

Two things to keep in mind on my review: One, I'm a longtime Sony HandiCam customer going back to the video-8 days (before Hi-8), and have purchased 4 Sony HandiCam's over the years (and still own a Hi-8). Two, I'm not writing this review a week or a...

Thinnest DVD camcorder, Incredibly sharp/clear video, Clean sound

Poor quality DVD-R/RW's can cause crashes and video loss, Video colors seem dull compared to the oversaturated colors of Sony HandiCams

Waste of money - should have purchased a sony

I want to warn anyone who may be thinking of purchasing a Canon DC-10 not to do it. It has been a completely frustrating experience. I wish I had read the reviews before trusting my local camera shop's recommendation. I was planning to purchase a Sony...

Too delicate of a camera.

This is the 2nd time I have lost data. First time I was on vacation in France it happened. Absolutely dissapointed with the performance of the camera's unknown deletion of data. Just returned from a 2nd family vacation with 30 minutes of key video...

Product Specifications

Exquisitely styled, delightfully slender and surprisingly lightweight, the 1.33 Megapixel DC10 records video and photos straight to DVD, for instant shooting and exciting in-camera edit possibilities. At just 47mm wide, the DC10 is delightfully slim. The casing's solid construction adds durability to a surprisingly lightweight body. Key controls are easy to locate and operate. Start shooting straight-to-DVD without rewinding or fast-forwarding tape. Thumbnails of each scene let you see at a glance which footage to share or quickly delete. Create playlists and group together favorite scenes and digital stills. Finalize the disc in-camera then play back on your home cinema. A 1/4" 1.33 Megapixel CCD sensor and DIGIC DV processor ensure great quality video and digital stills. DIGIC DV's true split path processor renders stills and video separately for uncompromised output quality of both formats. Canon's all-glass 10x zoom lens produces sharp, crystal clear results free of ghosting and smear. A built-in lens cap keeps out of the way and protects against dust and scratches. True 16:9 Widescreen mode means your images will naturally fill the screen of a widescreen TV without cropping or stretching. Electronic Image Stabilization suppresses the effect of vibrations and hand-held camera shake to keep images steady when you can't be. Particularly useful at high zoom ratios. The DC10 has a fully functioning digital still camera built in. Special Scene modes assist with tricky lighting conditions. 9-point AiAF auto focus keeps even off-center subjects clear and sharp. Auto exposure bracketing helps get the perfect exposure with every shot. Capture the pace of action events with Continuous Shooting mode. Put an end to storage worries with capacity to write up to 8,000 images to a single DVD. Connect direct to any PictBridge compatible photo printer and push the Print/Share button for quality photo prints without the computer. USB 2.0 Hi-Speed connects the DC10 to computers for fast transfer of video and stills. You can even use the DC10 as an external DVD burner for making duplicates of your home movies.
