Canon ZR500

In exchange for the microphone jack, you have to give up the wireless remote that comes with the ZR600 and the ZR700. Other than that, the ZR500 is virtually identical to those two models, right down to the 1/6-inch CCD, the simplistic joystick-driven...

Costs less than $300; wide-screen LCD; easy-to-use controls; built-in lens cover; above-average color reproduction; 25X optical zoom; plenty of manual controls for shooters who want them; works with add-on lenses and filters; microphone jack.

No shoulder strap or accessory shoe; bottom-loading tape compartment; not enough image stabilization at maximum zoom; poor low-light performance.

Canon's compact, capable ZR500 MiniDV camcorder is a dream come true for videographers on a shoestring budget.

Great camcorder on a budget!

This camcorder I bought used for $60 on ebay. And it has been tough! Sure there is no accessory shoe, or video light. But it overall does well if there is adequate lighting. In low light it isnt so good, and also the fact it uses MiniDV tapes can be a...

Good set of manual controls, easy to use, good video quality, viewfinder

A bit outdated, still uses the tape format which can be a pain

Great Camcorder

For anyone starting their video collection, or video blog, this video camera is awesome. Most of my stuff works well with it. A definite good camera.

Great size, cheap price, very good quality

Poor sound, battery life leaves a lot to be desired

Product Specifications

The MV500 and MV500i digital camcorders offer users enhanced PC connectivity and improved performance in a compact and stylish design. With their increased lens magnification, enhanced specifications and affordable price, these MV models offer outstanding cost performance. By offering varying levels of functionality and price, the MV500/MV500i provide consumers with an opportunity to select the camcorder that is most suited to their needs. This range offers the consumer an optimal combination of functionality and cost performance. Measuring just 58 x 99 x 144, these additions to the MV line-up are extremely compact and well designed. The CCD size in the MV500/MV500i has been reduced from 1/4" to 1/6", thus allowing Canon to dramatically increase the lens magnification while maintaining the compact size of the preceding MV400 Series models. With the incorporation of a high-performance Canon lens, both models provide a significant improvement in magnification capabilities. The MV500i and MV500 utilize an optical 18x/digital 360x, which are both replacing the 10x optical zoom lens of the preceding MV400 Series. These high-performance Canon zoom lenses transform distant subjects into dramatic close-ups. With the use of the analog-digital converter, users can convert analog video and audio signals, on VHS or 8 mm tape, into digital signals for real-time output from the DV terminal (IEEE 1394 interface). By selecting the shooting mode that best suits the scene, each MV500 series model adjusts internal controls to create the perfect video each time. Mode choices are Auto, Sports, Portrait, Spotlight, Sand and Snow, and Low Light as well as the Night Mode with which color shots are possible even in dim conditions.
