Good zoom function ; Lots of different modes

I bought my mv650i from jessops around 2 years ago, just after the one year warrenty the LCD display screen went, the camera still records ; The camera does not work well in low light, the picture quality is very poor ; The tape camera motor can...

This is an expensive camera for the quality of video you are going to end up with, i have a mvx100i which is 10x better. i was extremely dissapointed that the camera LCD display broke after only a year, canon wanted £180 to fix it.

A BIG disappointment

Maker's name ; Size ; Specifications

Grainy playback when shots viewed on a screen bigger than 2.5 inches ; Very poor performance indoors ; A camcorder for places where there is 'SUNLIGHT' 24/7 otherwise be prepared to watch 'grainy' shots

Used a Sony TRV 30 ,an 8mm camcorder bought in 1995. Thus went for the modern 'Digital' MV650i and got a shock when noticed that the performance of the bulky old 8mm Sony was far better then this 'digital' machine. It has so far spoiled nine birthday...

Canon MV650i - A promise unfulfilled.

The functionality and eas of use are second to none ; If you want a feature, it's there, and after only a few minutes of messing around, anyone who has used a camcorder before will be up and running ; Outdoor colours are bright and clear ; The 22x...

The picture pixelates badly in low light, and the low light compensation (a lamp built into the front, under the lens) does not really help, apart from things right in front and close to the camera ; Additionally, and this is what upset me the most,...

After owning a Hi-8 camera for years, and knowing that digital was the next big thing, I had expected great things from this camcorder, and while the build quality, and operation are flawless, I found the actual results (when considering the price-tag)...

Product Specifications

The MV600 series allows everyone from camcorder beginners, frequent travelers and families to select a camcorder most suited to their needs. Based on the popular MV500 Series the stylish design has been refreshed still utilizing different colors to emphasize the individuality of each model. These additions to the MV line-up are superbly designed and extremely compact - even with the included high-magnification lens. All models in the MV600 series utilize IEEE 1394, while the MV650i also offers USB and Direct Print, to maximize their connectivity to PCs, printers and video peripherals. Each model uses a totally perfect 1/6-inch 800, 000-pixel CCD, to produce even higher resolution movies, with the added facility of XGA still images on the MV650i. The range also incorporates the MACS (Multi Architecture Camera System) to optimize best quality image settings for movies and stills, depending on whether displayed on TV, PC, or printed via the Direct Print function (no PC is needed). Each model is also equipped with a high-performance two-sided aspheric Canon lens. The MV650i uses an optical 22x / digital 440x zoom lens for video and a free 0.6x wide-angle attachment. By selecting the shooting mode that best suits the scene, each MV600 series model adjusts internal controls to create the perfect video each time. Mode choices are Auto, Sports, Portrait, Spotlight, Sand and Snow, and Low Light as well as the new Night Mode with which color shots are possible even in dim conditions. The MV650i provides users with digital line-in functionality. With this feature, users can upload edited footage or graphics from their computer, or other digital devices, to the camcorder. The MV650i also features an analog-digital converter enabling analog images to be converted directly into digital images, without the need for recording onto digital tape first. Images previously recorded with an 8mm video camera, a TV signal or any analog image signal can now be directly stored digitally onto a PC without first recording onto a Mini DV tape. This function additionally allows for images and data to be digitally stored with media such as DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, etc. A variety of digital effects and fading functions is included for on-camera video editing. These effects previously had to be done on a PC. Effects include colors, ball, mirror, cube and wave while digital fade includes flip, tide, puzzle and beam effects. For those wanting to produce personalized films, the MV650i camcorder features an Audio Dubbing function. With this it is possible to create or replace commentary or music to footage, thereby enhancing or explaining the images. The MV650i includes a multi-image screen, which allows images to be played back on the LCD panel divided into 4, 9 or 16 separate screens. Alternatively the camera can display a series of images in sequence. To select the images to be displayed, users can either make a manual choice or use one of the preprogrammed transition speeds: fast, moderate or slow. Additionally, the range double as web cams using Canon's DV Messenger software, which allows you to take full advantage of Microsoft Windows XP's Messenger program. Simply connect the camcorder to the computer's IEEE1394 terminal to create a video conferencing studio, zoom in for a closer look, adjust focus and control the camcorder's playback functions through your computer. The MV650i also includes an SD Memory slot. Thus, in addition to capturing still images on a DV tape, an SD Memory Card can also be used to record, store and retrieve still images. This slot, which is also compatible with MMC cards, provides better PC affinity, because it allows simple transfer of these still images to a PC, using a PC card adapter and card reader, without needing to connect to a PC by a DV cable. The MV650i also features a Motion JPEG recording function, which means that short movies can be recorded onto a memory card making it easy to download to a personal computer or send via email. Canon's Progressive Photo system in the MV650i provides excellent digital picture quality. With this system, a mechanical shutter is used concurrently with interlace scan CCD to eliminate time lag blurring and capture clear and sharp still images. The enhanced picture quality produced by progressive photo mode will be especially evident when observing the printed digital images. Adding to the unique and stylish design of the MV650i, the camera control keys positioned above the LCD viewscreen can be illuminated, therefore facilitating operation in low-lit environments. With the Advanced Accessory Shoe, optional accessories can be mounted on the MV650i. Once mounted, the shoe is capable of exchanging data and supplying power directly to all accessories with which it is compatible, such as the Video light VL-3 and the Directional Stereo Microphone DM-50, which enable users to enhance both picture and sound quality.
