Samsung HMX-H105

Attractive design ; comfortable rotating grip ; manual shutter speed and aperture controls

SSD adds unnecessary price premium ; so-so video quality ; slow, inaccurate autofocus

An interesting design doesn't offset the so-so video quality and performance, especially for the higher priced HMX-H106, H105, and H104. If you're set on this series, though, the no-memory-included Samsung HMX-H100 is probably the best deal of the ...

SAMSUNG Camcorder SMX-F34 Schwarz

Comfortable, compact design ; 34x zoom lens ; 16GB internal memory ; good audio quality ; relatively easy to operate

Slow autofocus performance ; long zoom lens lacks optical image stabilization

The Samsung SMX-F34 is a serviceable inexpensive standard-definition camcorder, but the money goes more to storage and the megazoom lens than to video quality.

Oregon Scientific ATC3000

The ATC3K's waterproof, shockproof design takes bumps and splashes in stride. The Webcam and live monitor functions enhance the usefulness of the camera

The unit only captures VGA video, which is fairly low resolution by today's standards. Front heavy design makes the unit difficult to mount stably. Low light performance is abysmal. The ATC3K does not feature a still photography mode

The ATC3K Action Camera is rugged enough to take the knocks of extreme sports; however, it falls flat when it comes to video and photo quality.

Kodak Zi8

Video capture up to 1080p HD resolution ; image quality is quite good for a mini camcorder ; SD card slot ; removable, rechargeable battery ; bundled composite and HDMI cables ; strong low-light performance ; external mic jack ; electronic image ...

Bundled software isn't Mac compatible but necessary for smooth playback of 1080p video ; price doesn't include an optional memory card

With the Zi8, Kodak finally surpasses Flip Video's video quality and feature set.

Sony HDR XR100

Relatively fast startup ; comfortable design

So-so video quality for HD ; annoying touch screen and interface

While it's a perfectly serviceable HD camcorder, the Sony Handycam HDR-XR100 should deliver a little more of everything for the money.

Sony Handycam HDR-XR500

First rate video quality and performance ; geotagging videos is fun, if limited

Annoying menu system ; no wind filter ; no manual shutter-speed, iris or audio controls ; relatively big and heavy ; expensive

Though the geotagging capability is more of a novelty than killer a app in this product, and the interface could use a complete overhaul, the Sony Handycam HDR-XR500V and HDR-X520V's top-notch video quality, performance, and consumer-friendly feature ...
