GoPro Hero3 Silver Edition

With its top-notch video quality, compact design and waterproof case, the GoPro Hero3 is an excellent action camera, but we wished it offered a bit more juice.

Small and compact; Excellent video quality; Sturdy and waterproof case; More affordable than competing cameras

Sticks up awkwardly on helmet; Short battery life

Click to EnlargeThe GoPro Hero 3's video quality is simply the best among the helmet cameras we tested, and we appreciate its compact design and waterproof case. However, the helmet mount is awkward. More than once, it hit the crossbar on the ski lift....

GoPro Hero3 Silver Edition (11MP)

Lighter, smaller, sharper The GoPro Hero3 is 25 percent lighter than the previous-generation Hero 2's camera. It's also 30 percent smaller. However, all of that reduction manifests in reduced thickness with a new depth of only 20mm. The height and...

The GoPro Hero3 is smaller, lighter, and features built-in Wi-Fi connectivity. The Black Edition offers a number of ultra-high-resolution capture modes and high frame rates for standard HD resolutions; burst speeds for still photos has been greatly...

GoPro's control scheme has a longer learning curve than the simpler slide-n-go setup of the Contour cameras. Only 15fps on 4K video renders this selling point mostly moot for action videography.

The GoPro Hero3 Silver and White editions are strong contenders in the sports camera market, but the faster, more powerful Black Edition is head and shoulders the best sports camera on the market today.

"Great action cam for the enthusiast"

The GoPro Hero 3 White edition is a very affordable entry level action camera that is tough as nails and great at recording and capturing fun action shots. For the vacationer, the action sport enthusiast or the average person that wants to capture...

Durable, can go anywhere and capture any moment

Poor shooting quality in shade or dark

"The Go Pro Hero 3 White edition is a very good camera!"

Over all I think the Go Pro Hero 3 White edition is a very good camera for the price and would suggest it to people who want one for fun or even for actual photography!

Good video quality

Not as good as Black Edition

"Works good if you get one that works"

I received the Hero3 White edition for a Christmas present. It works without any problems. So, I decided to buy another one. This time, I bought the Hero3 Silver edition to have a higher quality still photos. I got home and downloaded the firmware...

"Good camera, but not the best."

I got this Hero3 White edition as a Christmas gift. I lucked out, and got one that worked. I have read review in other places where the cameras lock up, and stop working. I have not had this with the White. I did have that problem with the Hero3 Silver...

"Decent camera for sunny outdoors and no need for sound"

I bought this camera after borrowing a friends Hero 2, which which I was HUGELY impressed, thinking that the Hero 3 would be better. I was greatly disappointed, and returned two in a row thinking there must be something wrong with the camera. Now on my...

Light, cheap-ish, just works...usually. Armored case is well made.

EXTREMELY poor low light performance with the white edition, far worse than the admirable job the Hero 2 did. Electrical noise using internal microphone. Proprietary external mic adapter.

"Huge Disappointment and Waste of Time"

This item left me high-and-dry on a week-long trip of scuba-diving and reef snorkeling. It only worked once, recording a couple test videos and a few useless hotel photos. After that, I could never get it to record a video, take a picture, or even be...

Small Size

Complex clunky interface

"This product sucls"

I received a GoPro Hero3 Black Edition for Christmas, it had been on my wish list since I first started seeing the dozens of misleading YouTube videos that showed professional grade, high quality ACTION movies of people in high-risk sports. First...

A great camera that is well worth the price. Image quality was very good (even 60 feet underwater). The free companion app is very useful; you can adjust all of the camera's settings, take photos with a live preview, etc.

Easy to use

'Port door' is not attached, so it might be easy to lose track of.
