GoPro Hero

GoPro's new entry-level action camera, the Hero, is just as tough as its pricier siblings, but not nearly as versatile when it comes to frame rates and time-lapse.

Affordable. Rugged, waterproof design. Touch LCD. Good digital image stabilization. Voice control. Automated editing via phone app. Wi-Fi.

Limited choices for frame rates and resolutions. Can't set time-lapse interval. No ProTune, HDR, or Raw support.

The GoPro Hero is an action camera for users who don't need the extreme slow-motion, 24fps frame rate, adjustable time-lapse, and 4K video capture offered by the $400 Hero6 Black, but want the same level of build quality and waterproofing. If your...

GoPro Hero+

The GoPro Hero+ is a solid action camera if you're on a budget, but it can't be removed from its case and you can't swap its battery.

Rugged design. Numerous mounts available. Built-in Wi-Fi. 1080p60 video capture. Extremely wide field of view. Affordable.

Clunky interface. Front LCD not backlit. Can't be removed from case. Built-in battery can't be swapped in field. Two-hour recording life per charge. Lens shows a lot of distortion. Omits image stabilization. Requires optional accessory for tripod use....

Conclusions The GoPro Hero+ is an appealing choice for action cam shoppers who don't want to spend an arm and a leg on a camera (though there's no guarantee that you won't break a bone using one). If you want more resolution, you'll need to spend more...

GoPro Hero+ LCD review: A view of the action for less money

At $100 less than the Hero4 Silver -- GoPro's other touchscreen camera -- you're definitely saving some coin here, but its streamlined entry-level feature set and design make it less of a bargain.

The GoPro Hero+ LCD puts a live-view touchscreen on the back of a camera that's capable of very good 1080p video capture at 60 frames per second. Built-in wireless lets you use your phone or tablet to remotely control the camera.

The camera is permanently in its polycarbonate housing; the battery is nonremovable; limited shooting options compared with others in its price range and a significant drop in features and performance from the $400 Hero4 Silver.

The GoPro Hero+ LCD isn't exactly a bargain for its entry-level specs, but if you appreciate a streamlined feature set and its built-in touchscreen, it's worth the extra money over the very basic Hero.

Stripped-down GoPro Hero still pumps out good video

Though it is nearly devoid of features, this entry point for GoPro's camera line is just enough to get you started in the world of little, mountable cameras.

The GoPro Hero offers very good video quality for the money, gets you into the large mount ecosystem and the integrated housing is waterproof to 131 feet (40 meters).

The camera is permanently in its polycarbonate housing; the battery is built-in; it doesn't have GoPro's port for adding a touchscreen or extra battery pack or Wi-Fi; very limited shooting options.

Though the GoPro Hero is nearly devoid of features, this entry point for GoPro's lineup is just enough to get you started in the world of little, mountable cameras.

GoPro Hero

GoPro Hero review: GoPro's new entry-level camera is positioned as travel-friendly, but it strips away one too many features.

Decent image quality ; Solid companion app ; 2-inch touchscreen is easy to use ; Waterproof without a case

Limited FOV adjustment ; No ProTune exposure adjustment ; Restricted resolutions and frame rates

GoPro’s entry-level model strips away a few too many features to make it compelling.

GoPro Hero (2018) review: A go-anywhere action camera that sticks to the basics

A very tempting deal for those who don't need advanced technical features

Waterproof at up to 10m ; Excellent video stabilisation ; Great audio quality

Doesn’t shoot 4K ; Image quality is merely good ; No GPS

In short, if you’re not bothered about extreme resolutions and technical settings, but just want a versatile action camera at a sensible price, the new GoPro might just be the Hero you’ve been waiting for.

GoPro Hero review

For the past few years, while GoPro was dominating the upper end of the action cam market, it sort of neglected entry-level buyers who wanted the GoPro experience, losing them to other camera makers. That changes to some extent with the Hero.

The same rugged, waterproof body but with cut-down internals for a cheaper price. Is this the best GoPro yet? Find out in our 2018 GoPro Hero review.

GoPro Hero Session

The Hero Session is GoPro's smallest action camera to date. It's also now the cheapest in the range with the £99 Hero now discontinued. Is it worth £159 though? Here's our GoPro Hero Session review.

GoPro Hero Session review

  (Rating Hidden)

Significantly smaller than the traditional boxy GoPro design, the GoPro Hero Session is the latest action camera from the well-known brand. It doesn't include a waterproof case, and the battery is built-in, but how does this affect overall performance?...
