JVC Everio GZ-MC500

The GZ-MC500 is one of the most advanced models in JVC's line of Everio cameras, which capture both MPEG-2 video and photos on a little hard drive or a flash memory card. What sets this camera apart from its lesser siblings is its three-chip imaging...

Decent blend of video and still capabilities; generally sensible controls; easy searching and downloading; tiny size.

Mediocre battery life, viewfinder, and low-light performance; automatic features a bit sluggish; limited manual controls; no microphone jack.

This extremely compact, nicely designed camera should please technophiles who want both photo and video capabilities and can afford to splurge.

JVC GZ-MC500 First Impressions Camcorder Review - HDD

The new GZ-MC500 was just released by JVC and breaks some new ground being the smallest three CCD camcorder pretty much ever, and being the first, and only, three CCD camcorder to record to tapeless media, namely, a 4GB Microdrive. On top of this, the...

"Frustration, lost opportunities"

After working with this camera in a mobile, outdoor, climbing, flying, hiking, all season wilderness setting; I have had to hold back the urge to throw this camera against a large rock. Using it has taught me to dislike video cameras and I have decided...

It's got a great zoom for spotting game

Doesn't work below freezing, drop detection shuts off with movement, Video management system needs time to run if you change anything in the file system (delete shots) won't play back on some computers, proprietary software, slow turn on, clumsy zoom

"expensive paperweight"

The only reason I didn't give this a user rating of 1 is because for the very short time it worked it's photo quality was quite good and video reasonable. Some of the buttons a bit fiddly though. I've had problems from the beginning, first it wouldn't...

compact design

repairs expensive

"Mediocre camera/camcorder; there's better products out there than this!"

The still shot picture quality of adequate in normal lighting. I am disappointed in the camcorder piece of the everio. Hard to hold steady while videoing, heats up in a short amount of time, limited battery life and storage space. Difficulty playing...

Small, lightweight, easy to use

Short battery life, heats up during video recording

"Decent Camera, Poor Pictutres but..."

I purchased this camera a couple of months ago in the hopes that it would bridge the need to carry two cameras; one for Video, one for Stills. Although it doesn't accomplish this goal, the overall quality is good.

Size, Ease of Use, Transfer Speed

Battery Life, Cost of Accessories, Still Pictures

"Expensive useless toy"

I expected far more of this camcorder. The price is very high for the quality. I would point the main disadvantages which make the camcorder expensive useless toy:

Small size, easy to handle

Low batery capacity, very bad still pictures

"The Trick: Re-Size When You Render!"

I have had it for 4 days now and discovered something that must be shared.

Compact and discreet, no tapes, thumbnail videos

File conversion, data loss, quality

"good picture, but don't pan"

The camera is very small but feels solid in your palm. Picture is very good for normal outdoor situation, at least good enough for most family video album. But once you pan the camera, as most amateur users do when they follow the subject, the picture...

easy to use, good color for video and photo

low battery capacity, weak CCD when pan

"What's not to like - I mean, look at what you get!"

For me, this camera is perfect: I need 3 chip mpeg2 video quality coupled with good still capability… this camera offers all that and more. First of all, the hard drive storage means no waiting for rewinding – access to files is instant, just like a...

Compact, capable, dual mode camera!

Low light not up to par, but that's picky

Product Specifications

The GZ-MC500 creates sharp, vivid and pristine images by dedicating a 1.33 (1.23 effective) Megapixel CCD to each red, green and blue color. JVC's advanced prism optics and filterless 3CCD pixel shift technology quadruple the pixel count to record 5Megapixel class stills. (In video mode Everio uses 691, 200 effective pixels for each RGB color). Thanks to the broader dynamic range, enjoy videos with truly realistic colors and digital stills with up to 2560 x 1920 image size for beautiful prints. JVC optics use technology that assures high precision CCD registration with extreme accuracy on the order of one micron. Make digital-to-digital transfers using the USB 2.0 interface for quick downloading to a PC. Print directly from the USB to any PictBridge compatible printer. The rotating grip of the MC500 lets you comfortably transition shooting angles from the palm of your hand.
