The GR-D290's ease of use and adequate performance in a wide range of situations recommend it to beginners.

25X optical zoom, great versatility

Low quality still images, lacks advanced manual features

The JVC GR-D295 offers a lot of zoom for the money and is worth consideration if you shoot mainly in brightly lit situations.

Compact ; Inexpensive ; Numerous manual settings ; Two batteries included

Poor low-light performance ; Terrible stills ; Awkward menu controls

The JVC GR-D290's CCD's resolution is actually slightly lower than the 1,024x768-pixel maximum still-image resolution, so pictures are interpolated to the larger size. Photo quality is extremely poor, with shots lacking detail and with noise and...

JVC GR-D290 Camcorder

Camcorders are not something I see a lot of, however for that very reason I can probably spot the differences easier than someone looking at them week in week out.

SimplyDV Review: JVC GR-D290 DV Camcorder

Sturdy build quality, good manual control, 25x optical zoom, choice of widescreen modes, good zoom control, respectable images in low light conditions

Bottom-loading tape mechanism, 500x digital zoom is useless.

A well-featured camcorder for beginners and upgraders that offers great all-round performance at a competitive price. Recommended.

Very pleased with my GR-D290

Replaced another JVC mini DV camcorder with this one. The other one was more expensive and more complicated with tiny buttons and things that anyone over 30 would have difficulty seeing no less someone with fingers larger than a child's could operate. ...

Easy to manipulate, hold, and good quality video.

Hand strap really leaves something to be desired. MUCH too small. Lens cover useless!

An excellent digital camcorder with lots of features for the price.

The JVC GR-D290 is an excellent mini dv camcorder. Its boasts lots of features at an affordable price. It comes with a handy remote control. The camcorder has a USB port for transferring the digital stills and a DV (firewire) port for transferring ...

Bursting with features.Easy transfer of video to PC.Supports pass-through.

Tape loads from bottom. Inconvenience for tripod users.

The main review stated it has no analogue video input so you cannot convert your old analogue videos. Not strictly true as I converted all my analogue videos by connecting the GR-D290 to my VCR. I was then able to digitise them and put them onto mini...

I like eveything about this camera

Lens cap won't stay, but that is a minor detail

"Used it once and now the LCD screen isn't working"

Don't waste your money. Even though it was supposed to be cheap, $300 seems like a waste on a peice of junk

Worked well the first time I used it

6 months after buying it I pulled it out to capture my son's first steps and the LCD screen doesn't work!! By the time I figurd out that it did still record, but the screen just didn't work the moment was over. I'll never get that back

Product Specifications

JVC introduces the Live Slow technology with the GR-D290. This technology allows, for the first time ever, the user to record slow motion images and play them back with real-time sound. Live Slow is extremely useful for playing back precious or hard-to-see moments as the speed is slowed down to a quarter of normal playing speed. This effect is achieved by the camera recording the picture at 1/4 the normal speed, and thus showing with great clarity a slow motion effect. Slow motion images are recorded with sound on a DVC tape and played back in real time, thus allowing one to view greater detail in the image. In addition, even footage shot at normal speed can be played back with the slow motion effect. In this way precious moments become all the more enjoyable.
