Expert review by: Ben Wolf (

Review: JVC broke new ground with the aptly named GR-HD1, the first consumer-oriented high-definition (HD) camcorder. If you're a well-heeled video hobbyist or an entry-level pro looking for a camcorder with the resolution to fill a 16:9 HD television...

Great resolution; comfortable design; solid construction; supports up- and down-conversion for a variety of display options

Low-resolution viewfinder; lacks professional controls usually available for the price; mediocre color and latitude; few editing options; limited zoom range

As the only single-chip consumer high-def camcorder, the JVC GR-HD1 is the ultimate for amateur videographers with HDTVs. But pros should look for an HD camera with more advanced features.

Mini DV and HD Camcorder Review JVC GR-HD1

JVC, inventor of the ubiquitous VHS format, has done it again, offering an innovative high-definition consumer camcorder that is the first of its kind. High-definition enthusiasts seeking a unique accessory for their HDTVs will love it. If you own an...

HD, progressive scan ; Very easy to use

Limited editing options ; Quality depends on TV used

The HD out part is more complex. It was clear from our examination of the video that we captured some lovely footage, we just couldn't appreciate it without an HDTV that could display the image at 1280x720. If you own an HDTV and would like to shoot...

Jvc Grh-d1

Look and feel like a pro with the Jvc Grh-d1 high definition MiniDV camcorder. This HD camcorder looks high end without the high price tag. It produces excellent quality video, natively records in widescreen aspect ratio and allows for both auto and...

This is a great camcorder for amateur videographers just cutting their teeth or those that want just a little more manual control than the compact HD camcorders offer

The camera suits my needs well.

The bottom line is, the camera does what it is supposed to do and does it fairly well. I've been using it for a while now and have gotten really familiar with it's quirks. I could find something I didn't like about any camera I've used so hammering a...

It's fairly easy to use and the learning curve isn't too extreme. I've had JVC cameras for some time now, so pretty much I find this camera up to par all the way around. I

Just about the only thing I could grouse about would be the stupid little "thumb" button control to change camera modes and turn it on and off. It is quite simply a pain in the butt to operate with my thumb

Great first choice for any type of Videography

The JVC GR-HD1 does the job for what I do. From short films to class projects, this works for me. I've been through 3 camcorders in the past and I believe this has been my best buy. The setup is very simple and friendly. The final picture looks great...

Good for the price but somewhat delicate.

I've got a JVC HD100, HD110 and the HD1. While the bigger 100 and 110 are vastly superior in image quality, I really like the grab and go nature of the HD1. If I'm shooting sports or any fast paced action, I like to have the ability to let the...

Nice image quality, contrast, black levels. Comfortable size for quick handheld shooting

Have had it in for repairs twice due to focusing problems - wouldn't get or keep focus on auto or manual setting
