JVC Everio HD GZ-HD7

High-def, hard drive storing, 1080i-capable camcorder misses the mark.

Hard drive stores five hours of video. Works with external mics. Nice manual focus ring.

Expensive. Not-so-sharp imagery. Bad image stabilization. No headphone jack. Footage hard to edit in Final Cut. Not fully iMovie '08 compatible.

We love the HD7's roomy hard drive, but the camera's sky-high price and subpar image quality should make you think twice before buying. If you plan to edit video in anything other than iMovie HD 6, we'd recommend skipping the Everio HD GZ-HD7 altogether.

JVC Everio GZ-HD7

If this camcorder cost $500, we'd give it a much higher rating. But for its quadruple-digit price, we expect far better performance and video quality from the JVC Everio GZ-HD7.

Nice manual features; attractive design; high-quality audio; low-noise, low-light video

Ineffectual optical stabilizer; needs a built-in ND filter; some horizontal jitter and stuttering during playback; low-resolution video; sad battery life

JVC Everio GZ-HD7 Review

High Definition (HD) camcorder buyers face a whirlwind of choices including formats, recording media and price. Which is best–HDV, AVCHD, MPEG-2, MPEG-4? Should I go with tape, flash memory, hard drives or mini DVDs? And should I spend $700 USD–or lots...

Good video quality; five-hour video capacity; excellent manual options; attractive design

No AF Assist lamp ; flash or light; offloading and storing HD content is a pain; expensive

The Everio HD7 is a hefty camcorder but has a nice solid feel, balancing well in the palm of your hand.

Product Specifications

The HD Everio GZ-HD7 is the world's first consumer camcorder to offer Full HD 1920x1080i recording. Native 1920x1080i resolution is maintained throughout the recording to playback process from lens, CCD, MPEG2 Transport Stream and output via HDMI or USB 2.0 with no quality-degrading conversion. With a 60GB built-in hard disk drive you can enjoy up to five hours of Full HD 1920x1080i recording at a high 30Mbps (MAX), plus you get two additional recording modes. The 2.8" widescreen LCD offers a 16:9 aspect ratio for wide cinematic video shooting. Naturally the playback picture can be enjoyed in full widescreen dimensions on the LCD or on a connected widescreen TV. This Clear LCD cuts surface reflections and glare to maintain a clear, visible, bright view during outdoor recording in direct sunlight. The GZ-HD7 is also equipped with a color viewfinder. It's useful when shooting under strong sunlight where an LCD is not clearly visible or when you want to save battery power.
