JVC GZ-MG130 Camcorder Review

JVC was the company that pioneered HDD camcorders on the consumer market with their Everio series, and until last year, the company had a virtual monopoly on self-contained camcorders. Enter Sony, who in 2006 entered the market aggressively with the...

After watching the camcorder industry for as long as we have, you begin to see trends that play out from year to year. Sadly, 2007 is not the year for JVC's entry-level Everios to make a break for greatness. Once again, video performance was only fair,...

Under the hood, the GZ-MG130 looks a bit scrawny, featuring the standard entry-level specs: a 1/6-inch, 680,000 CCD. A chip this size does not generally yield the most optimal video. In fact, the GZ-MG130 produces a soft, almost blurred image, and...

Shooting in low light is a challenge for all entry-level camcorders. Fortunately, the GZ-MG130 comes equipped with shutter speed control to give it some flexibility. Though the similarly-priced Sony DCR-DVD308 produces a better image under most...

At 3000 lux, the image is decent. The fine detail is lacking, to be sure. The resolution score (below) confirmed this – the pixel count is simply not there on the sensor. This is typically the case for camcorders in this price range, but exceptions can...

Good HQ Camera...for back in the Day

Considering that I recently discovered the CCD optical sensor feature for this model, I am actually a bit impressed. New HD JVC Everios you find today will have a CMOS sensor, meaning that footage can become wobbly with artifacts..with the GZ-MG130,...

Simple menu navigation, lots of recording time, HUGE time lapse capability, good audio, zoom, white LED for night scenes, solid structure, no wavy jello effect footage, auto-focus

Recording format of .MOD might be confusing for some people to get onto their computer, runs into recording issues if strong strong winds blow directly onto lens (explained), strictly 29.97fps, no adjusting different frame modes

So so video performance

This camera is great except for 2 things, low light performance and a overall soft image. The camera pretty much prefers outside daylight. Image becomes underexposed even with a decent amount of lights indoors. You can manually drop shutter speed to...

Small size ; Large storage capacity ; Can record on SDHC card as well ; 16:9 LCD screen ; Decent manual controls ; Clean looks and fits great in your hand

Soft image ; Horrible low light sensitivity ; 90 minute battery capacity

Terrible Customer Support from JVC

I will never purchase another JVC product. Recently I purchased a new computer and needed to reinstall the driver for my camcorder. Unfortunately, I could not find my original disc that came with the camera. I looked all over the web for the correct...

Very little, lower price than most HDD camcorders, but with the lack of support and inability to transfer in standard file formats I guess you get what you pay for

Terrible Customer Support, Can olny transfer files to PC in MOD format (a proprietary format not recognized by most video software)

I just got my new jvc everio mg130u camera and so far i love all of it's features except for the battery life(the battery that comes with it) and the video format that which the camcorder records in. It records in MOD. Which not to many other programs...

Pretty good entry level HDD camcorder

I received this camera as a gift. It is a great camcorder for 90% of consumers out there. It is very easy to use, the video is good and you just plug in a USB cable and transfer files. JVC saves video in a .mod format, but when you transfer the files...

ease of use; does video and still imagery; SD expansion slot

MOD video format, but there is a workaround
