Sony NEX-VG30H review


Let's get this out of the way: Sony's Handycam NEX-VG30H camcorder is pricey and big. At $2,700, you could buy almost 10 budget compact camcorders that shoot high-def. But comparing the VG30 to a regular consumer camcorder is like pitting a BMW...

Lens interchangeability with E-mount and Alpha- mount lenses ; Depth-of-field control for cinematic storytelling ; Large sensor delivers great video and photo quality ; Superb surround audio capture

Can get very expensive if you add additional lenses ; Too cumbersome for one-handed use ; Some audio focusing noise with certain Alpha lenses

As a consumer camcorder, the Sony NEX-VG30H is pricey for most, but it gives you the benefits of interchangeable lenses and a large sensor that let you create cinema-quality video.

Sony's excellent—and pricey—successor to the VG20 includes a new power zoom and an updated EVF.

Besides the added zoom control, the biggest change with the VG30 is its price. The camcorder retails for $1,799 body-only, which is $200 more than the VG20 original sold for in 2011. If you want the fancy new 18-200mm power zoom lens, that'll kick up...
