Panasonic HDC-HS700

One of the least expensive and most compact camcorders available with a full manual feature set and electronic viewfinder, plus a 1080/60p recording mode, the Panasonic HDC-TM700 presents an attractive option for users dissatisfied by the quality and...

Very good low-light video quality; full set of manual features; 1080/60p recording option

Smallish, low-resolution LCD; coarse EVF; some edge artifacts in video; middling still photo quality

The flash-based Panasonic HDC-TM700 and its hard-disk sibling, the HDC-HS700, stand out for their low-light video quality and broad set of manual controls. However, while the TM700 is very attractively priced for its class, the HS700 is not, and not...

Panasonic HDC-HS700 review

Panasonic's HDC-HS700 gets top marks in almost every department and comes with all the storage you'll ever need built in. This is a seriously powerful camcorder, so only serious power users need apply.

Amazing image quality ; 1080p progressive mode ; Wide-angle lens ; Good selection of manual controls ; Lens ring ; Good image stabiliser ; Separate viewfinder

Expensive ; Quite heavy ; and that's it

To be fair, the price of the Panasonic HDC-HS700 has fallen dramatically since its launch. But if 840 whole British pounds is just too much, you could consider one of the other 700-series models instead. The HDC-TM700 is very similar to the HS700 in...

Panasonic HDC-HS700

Excellent low-light video quality and a broad set of manual controls make the HS700 a good camcorder, but its much better priced flash memory SD700 sibling is the one to have.

Very good low-light video quality ; Full set of manual features ; 1080/50p recording option

Smallish, low-resolution LCD ; Coarse EVF ; Some edge artifacts in video ; Middling still photo quality ; SD card only SD700 much better value

Unless you need enough capacity to record all-day sessions there's really no reason to opt for the overpriced hard-drive-based HS700; a hard drive full of video left in the camcorder is an accident waiting to happen. Especially since the SD700 is so...

Panasonic HDC-HS700

The Panasonic HDC-HS700 is a camcorder that can shoot and store hours of Full HD footage, thanks to its built-in 240GB HDD. It is also simple to use and is packed with a lot of features that can help you take that perfect shot.

Easy to use; LCD and viewfinder; Quick start-up; Manual settings; Face detection; AF/AE tracking; High-quality video; Good audio; Included software made it easy for us to transfer, edit, and burn videos; SDXC compatible

There were times when we didn’t know if a photo was shot during video mode; Some lag experienced during menu browsing; Price may put off some

"Absolutely amazing"

4 stars for the aperture thing. FGor general shooting this thing can't be beat. Still shots are not up to DSLR standard, but still very good. For video this thing puts out stuff that looks like it cost 2-3 times as much.

Wonderful image quality and the 50P (Australia) is just swimmingly smooth. The Image Stabilisation has to be seen to be believed.I have used the camera, hand held, to track dogs at play and this camera makes it a dream.

in manual mode, changing the shutter speed alters the "aperture" which adds noise. You then have to go back to aperture and it will at least leave the shutter alone.

Camera has most of the features I was looking for

It's hard to believe what this small camera puts out. The image quality is so good. (And the 1080 60p footage is spectacular, though I've only been able to watch it, not edit it, while waiting for Apple to produce an updated codec for editing). The...

Image quality is excellent, even in lower bit-rate modes ; Low light capability is better than expected ; Lens is wide-angle, but has plenty of zoom ; Good set of manual controls ; Excellent image stabilization ; Tons of space on hard drive ; Decent...

The shoe mount is recessed too low to attach almost anything ; Manual controls not instantly accessible on touch screen ; Can't edit 1080 60p video on my iMac

Product Specifications

The HDC-HS700 uses the progressive method to record twice as much image data as the interlace method. Whereas interlacing requires two images to produce a complete picture, the progressive method records a single image as a complete picture. Plus, the 60 Progressive Recording of the HDC-HS700 produces 60 images per second. This extremely dense image information creates intricate detail and silky smooth motion. Even when subjects move quickly, afterimages are minimized to create more natural images. The 35mm wide-angle lens on the HDC-HS700 fits more people and more of the background into the frame than a conventional lens. This is especially handy when you want to take a group photo in a small room. The HDC-HS700 features a 12x optical zoom and an Intelligent Zoom function that goes all the way up to 18x. When using intelligent zoom, Intelligent Resolution technology lets you shoot at high zoom rates while preserving image sharpness. You get crisp images of highly detailed objects - without the blurry edges.
