Panasonic PV-DV400 Camcorder Review - Panasonic MiniDV Camcorders

The PV-DV400 is a middle range model in Panasonic's Digital line. It has an MSRP of $1,099, inexpensive for a MiniDV format camcorder. The camcorder has the standard IEEE1394 FireWire editing protocol that transfers your footage to a computer for...

I bought this camcorder after looking for one for over a year. It was just over $800 USD and was the current model.

Panasonic PV-DV400 PalmCorder - Is it worth the extra money ?

I've been an avid videographer since the birth of my daughter back in July of 2000. Since that time, I was making exceptional use of my Panasonic PV-DV200 Mini DV Digital Palm Corder and I couldn't be happier with it (see my earlier review). But...

Exceptional video quality. Decent Digital Stills. Loaded with features. Easy to use.

More bells and whistles than 'cheaper' models, but not really worth the extra money.

Nice Overall Package + Good Value

I looked over a variety of DV camcorders but was sold on the Panasonic mid-line models due to the excellent zoom range, digital still capability and overall inclusive feature set for the price. I've used my DV400 for about 8 months now and am really...

Hey whaddaya want for $500?!?

I bought this camera based on a few factors, but the most important factor was price. You see I got this camera for a little over $500 and then I got a $100 rebate! What a deal! You can still find this camera for about $550 (mid-August 2001).

Great LCD, cheap, good battery life (with optional 5hr. battery)

Picture quality is so-so for DV

Not a bad camera if you get it on sale

I was in the market for a new camcorder that had computer connectivity features. For the money, this model had more than other brands, especially with the built-in digital camera mode, albeit it's not very good resolution.

Small Size, built-in digital camera, FireWire connectivity, Good battery life

Digital pics only at 640X480, Could have sharper picture

i used to hate Panasonic

Being a loyal Sony guy my whole life, I was hesitant to even consider buying the Panasonic. I am a videographer by profession and none of us use any Panasonic equipment. But the price was just right and Panasonic was offering a mail-in rebate for me...

loaded w/features, small, lightweight, resonably priced

battery life, light is optional, remote is optional

Excellent outdoor camcorder for the money

My wife and I purchased the PV-DV400 from an online store and paid $599 before Panasonic's $100 rebate. To use the rebate, you must purchase either a PV-DV100, 200, 400, or 800 by June 30, 2001. This is an excellent offer ($499) for a MiniDV...

Excellent picture quality and vibrant colors outdoor

So so quality indoors (about Hi8 equivalent)

Product Specifications

The PV-DV400 delivers high resolution digital video that is so sharp, it must be seen to be believed. But that is just the beginning. It also features an 18X optical zoom lens, digital effects, i.LINK and serial interfaces, 3-inch color LCD monitor and color viewfinder, removable 8MB MultiMedia card, and an IR filter that allow recording in near total darkness. Mini DV is the revolutionary digital video format that takes home video recording to new, previously unimaginable levels. Almost 500 lines of horizontal resolution combined with CD-quality audio on a miniature cassette that is 56% smaller than a 8mm tape. And, when using an 80-minute tape in LP mode, the PV-DV400 can record up to two full hours of video. The 3" high-resolution view screen flips out and rotates 270 degrees for great versatility. Tilt it down for high angle overhead shooting in crowds, tilt it up for low-angle shots or tilt it forward for self-portraits. With the built-in speaker, you can play back and watch your entire recording instantly. With 110, 000 Pixels, you'll always get a great image. Color Viewfinder allows you to see what you're recording in full vivid color. 18x Hi-Definition Zoom is a powerful optical zoom that acts like a telescope to get you closer to the action. It's great for close-ups, too. Also, it operates at seven different zoom speeds, so you can go from wide angle to full telephoto in 2 to 22 seconds; a great feature for your cinematic flexibility. Panasonic uses DEIS (Digital Electronic Image Stabilization) to compensate for unintentional hand and camcorder movement to help stabilize recordings, even if you're recording in a moving vehicle or a crowded room. PhotoShot Integrated Digital Still Camera allows you to use the digital camcorder as a digital still camera. You can record up to 750 still images on one 60-minute MiniDV tape in LP mode, and then transfer them to your computer via the IEEE 1394 interface. Great for use in e-mail or printed documents, play them back on a TV for a personal Slide show, or print them as photos on a compatible printer. It can even make simulate a shutter sound like a traditional motor drive camera. Built-in Monitor Speaker allows you to listen to your video on playback. External Input Recording allows you to input video programs from external sources, for employing your camcorder as an auxiliary recorder, or editing audio or video programs. PCM Digital Stereo Recording and Playback provides wider range and better clarity in recording. Automatic Exposure Shutter Speed Control automatically adjusts the shutter speed according to light conditions. Backlight Compensation/ Gain Up reduces the chances of "silhouettes" in your videos by adjusting to backlighting conditions automatically. Bookmark Search probes the blank portions of your tape to find the end of your last recording, even after you have ejected your tape and reinserted it at a later date. SP/LP Tape Speeds provides flexibility in recording choices. SP has normal recording times without a loss of audio or video quality.
