Panasonic PV-DV601 Camcorder Review - Panasonic MiniDV Camcorders

Panasonic's PV-DV601 is a nice mid-range MiniDV camcorder with an MSRP of $1099.95 and a street price of around $800. The camcorder produces nice quality video, however it lacks many features which make it a less than desirable product, leaving a gap...

Great Value, Good Quality

I got the DV601 as a christmas present. I've been very happy with it so far. I won't recap all the specifications, you can find the most accurate listing on panasonic's home page. I'll just tell you the things that aren't on their home page.

Beautiful Picture, Analog Inputs!

Bulkier than typical miniDV cameras

A great little camera

My wife and I have a 9 month old daughter and I have wanted a camcorder for a long time. The most important feature was that the camera needed to have a firewire (i.Link) port so I could edit the videos on the computer and then copy them onto CD. I...

I love my PV-DV601 !!!

Good things come in small packages

We bought this digital camcorder right before the birth of our daughter. We did a lot of research before buying it. My husband read a lot of online reviews and time and time again, the Panasonic PV-DV601 was at the top of the lists.

Easy to use, compact, decent battery life, good quality video, USB and firewire connections

Digital picture resolution is not great, lack of advanced camcorder settings

Product Specifications

This unit is the Goldilocks of camcorders. Not too big, not too small, not too simple yet not too complicated, not low end yet not upper end either. It's just Right! A middle of the road digital camcorder that includes the 3 B's. (No, Not 3 Bears) But, number One Beautiful Picture, number Two Bountiful Features, and number Three Bargain of a price. And only the optional fluid head tripod can complete this storybook tale and give you the user a truly happy ending.Implemented in the DV601, MagicVu/IR Filter (0 Lux) allows you to record video in near total darkness (images recorded in black and white, blue or green). Movie Messenger allows you to easily transfer your motion or still image files with audio from your digital Palmcorder camcorder to your PC and then attaches the file to an email via the USB cable or the IEEE 1394 interface. And best of all, the Movie Messenger software application attaches itself to the file, so the recipient has everything they need to open it. Analog-In lets you save all of your memories recorded in analog format by allowing you to archive them on to digital Mini DV tape. Built-in Color Enhancement Light Included for low light shooting conditions. DUAL Digital Electronic Image Stabilization (Record and Playback) helps to stabilize your recordings during recording or playback. Digital Effects (Record and Playback) lets you add exciting special effects to make your videos come to life. 5-Mode Program AE (Auto Exposure) lets you prepare your camcorder to shoot in almost any recording condition. PCM Stereo (12-bit/16-bit) allows you to add new audio while maintaining existing audio. Index Search (with included IR remote control) lets you access each program with a simple touch of the remote control. Book Mark Search probes the blank portion of your tape (in VCR mode) and finds the end of your last recording and Manual Focus Ring lets you adjust the focus level, a feature that is very useful for experienced video enthusiasts.
