Panasonic PV-GS85

Budget camcorders might not seem flashy, but they play an important part in every camcorder line. They're designed to be an affordable, no-frills product that anyone can pick up for just a few hundred dollars. Since price is their main selling point,...

Decent video quality; 32X optical zoom lens; optical image stabilization; native 16:9 wide-screen video.

Useless night mode; submegapixel sensor won't wow you with resolution.

The Panasonic PV-GS85 is a serviceable budget camcorder, but better choices are out there.

The Panasonic PV-GS85 was our winner for 2007's Best Camcorder Under $300, making it a true bargain for the budget shopper. At this price, you wouldn't expect many frills, but prepare to be surprised. Panasonic packs in the manual controls, optical...

Panasonic PV-GS85 Digital Camcorder

Panasonic has recently released two new budget camcorders: the PV-GS80 and PV-GS85. Both camcorders are sub-$300 shooters, so as you might imagine, they are now jam-packed with features. This article will focus on the PV-GS85, so keep reading for a...

Overall, the Panasonic PV-GS85 is a solid budget camcorder with decent image quality, solid low-light capabilities, nice wide-angle shooting, good manual controls, and a nice OIS system. At under $300, the PV-GS85 is a great value, as long as you don't...

Panasonic PV-GS85 Review and Prices

The Panasonic PV-GS85 MiniDV camcorder is a step up from the entry level PV-GS80, and while it delivers quality video, it offers few extra features over the cheaper unit. The two camcorders offer identical optical setups: The PV-GS85 features a single...

Good video performance in well-lit situations, built-in video light, 32x optical zoom and excellent optical image stabilization system

Very limited stills function, poor low light performance

"Fantasic Camera, OIS is really helpfull for shaky hands!"

If you are either a person who makes Family movies for get-togethers, or are a ameture movie maker, this is a good start. I am not saying that this is a professinal camera of the masters of film, I am saying that this is where you should start....

OIS, the Bright Video light is VERY usefull for darker locations. The positioning of all of the buttons all fall into your comfort range, as they are all right at your thumb and fore fingers.

One- When you zoom, the OIS decreases, but that can be fixed with a Tri-pod, or a mono-pod EASILY. Two- The battery must come out so you can used the Fire-Wire...not bad, just strange.

"Spectacular Budget Camcorder"

Overall great camera for its low price range. I would advise paying the few extra dollars to get the PV-GS85, and not the PV-GS80. The built-in light and SD card compatibility is worth it.

Outrageously great audio quality. Very low wind interference. Voices come out crystal clear.

Colors are slightly less vibrant than real life. Built-in playback speaker sounds very bad....the actual recorded audio is much better.

"Vivid colors and clear sound"

This is my third camcorder. I had two Sony before. The first was an 8 mm camcorder, and it recorded nice footage and had a clear stereo sound. The second one, Digital 8 format, was very noisy and the footage was rather grainy. I was disapointed with...

Vivid color, optical image stabilizer, joystick, sound quality

access to DV port

"High Value Camcorder"

Overall. a GREAT value for your dollar. The Optical Image Stabilization actually works! The image quality played back on a 16/9 50" was acceptable, in fact surprisingly good. Wish the EVF was angularly adjustable, and the hand strap was a bit more...

OIS, Simple Userface, DVI.

EVF doesn't have angular adjustment, Most interfaces require battery removal, not the best "hand feel".

Product Specifications

Panasonic PV-GS85 is a powerful 32x optical zoom camcorder with O.I.S. Panasonic's O.I.S. minimizes the handshake that can be such a problem with handheld shots. Because Panasonic's system is optical, there is no image quality degradation. When you're shooting a still picture, the MEGA O.I.S. system automatically activates, doubling the corrective power. With O.I.S. and MEGA O.I.S., the camcorder is equipped for clear, beautiful shooting of both motion and still pictures. This 32x zoom can fill the screen with even a distant subject. Not only is this lens the powerful zoom offered in a home-use digital camcorder, but it also features low distortion. And because it's optical, there is no quality loss - you get the images in all their natural beauty. The Pure Color Engine converts the CCD output signal from a complementary color signal into an RGB signal at an early stage and extracts the low-frequency luminance component from the RGB signal. This innovative engine also achieves truly superb color reproduction for high-zoomed pictures. This model offers the High-Picture-Quality Wide Mode, which produces images that make for beautiful, dramatic viewing on a wide-screen TV. The image is processed on 16:9 area of the CCD. Because the image decoded has the same proportions as your wide-screen TV, there is virtually no picture quality degradation. You get beautiful images and all the excitement and dynamism on either a wide 16:9 screen TV or a conventional 4:3 TV. This model also features a wide 2.7-inch LCD, making it easier to frame shots when you're shooting in 16:9 mode. You can enjoy shooting wide, and viewing wide. You can snap off a still picture (VGA) while continuing to record motion pictures. You don't even have to change recording modes. The motion pictures are recorded onto tape, the still is recorded onto the SD Memory Card.
