Camera Review: Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD700

If you're in the market for a pocket-sized HD camcorder, the Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD700 ($429, street) should place near the top of your list. The digital video camera, which Sanyo touts for both its 720p HD video capture and 7.1-megapixel still...

Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD700 review

Sensationally inexpensive, this cam aims to usher in the era of HD for all

Head-turning price ; Plenty of features ; Great image quality

Sluggish autofocus ; Fiddly controls

Cheap it may be, but the VPC-HD700 is far from the performer we’d hope it would be. Low light and movement cause all manner of problems. Even for the less demanding audience it’s aimed at, this is likely to still be not quite good enough.

in its cost (around £50), because no storage is included in the box

Shooting made simple. Refreshing design and good picture quality for both video and stills.

Sanyo Xacti HD700 review

Why take a camcorder and stills camera on holiday when you can buy a hybrid product such as those in Sanyo's Xacti range? Seemingly perfect for that weekend break, the pistol-like Sanyo Xacti HD700's blurb boasts of High Definition images, yet in truth...

Lightweight and easy to use, the Sanyo Xacti HD700 looks impressive but with plastic buttons and controls its pricing feels high. Especially when you can get a good quality camcorder for around £300, and a 7Mp stills camera for £100. Ultimately, it's...

HTC S740 Review

I would be really impressed if HTC could bring out a derivative without the keyboard, a la diamond, that would be good in my opinion.

Sanyo VPC-HD700

High resolution stills and laudable quality for the money, but image stabilisation isn't the best

The design also makes the Sanyo one of the smaller models on test in this Labs – the HD700 can even be squeezed into a jeans pocket, a rather painful feat if attempted with the bulky Canon HG10

An above-average all-rounder that adds 720p recording to an already attractive mix

Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD700

Now that the high-definition format war is finally coming to an end, with Blu-ray appearing to have beaten HD DVD into submission, high-def movies are far more likely to grow in popularity

Head-turning price, Plenty of features, Great image quality

Fiddly controls, Sluggish autofocus

Cheap it may be, but the VPC-HD700 is far from the performer we'd hope it would be. Low light and movement cause all manner of problems. Even for the less demanding audience it's aimed at, this is likely to still be not quite good enough

Sanyo Xacti HD700 review

The pistol-like Sanyo Xacti HD700's blurb boasts of High Definition images, yet in truth its 30-frames-per-second (fps), 720p video resolution is more HD-ready than full HD (look to the more expensive HD1000 for that).

Lightweight and easy to use, the Sanyo Xacti HD700 looks impressive but with plastic buttons and controls its pricing feels high. Especially when you can get a good quality camcorder for around £300, and a 7Mp stills camera for £100. Ultimately, it's...

Product Specifications

The compact, pocket-fitting Xacti HD700 measures just 73.7 x 35 x 109 mm and weighs 189 g (body only). In line with other Xacti series digital movie cameras, it's shaped for comfortable one-handed shooting on the run. It's the ideal movie camera to match your active, on-the-go lifestyle. HD movies on the Xacti HD700 are recorded in the high-compression MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format. As the movie files are small, they're easy to upload to the web for podcasts or weblogs. An electronic image stabilizer helps keeps your movies smooth and steady, while the 5x optical zoom and 12x digital zoom let you zero in on the action while it's happening. The Xacti HD700 captures the magic of the moment forever, with high-sensitivity 7.1-megapixel still images at up to ISO 3200. Still images and movies can even be captured simultaneously, with a simple button press. Meanwhile, features such as the Face Chaser, Full Auto and Simple modes make the HD700 as fun for the beginner to use as it is for the more experienced photographer. The supplied docking cradle gives you a raft of connection options. By connecting the unit (via USB) to an external hard disk, you can back up your movies and stills without having to access a PC. The cradle also sports HDMI and component video connections, for high-quality playback on a connected HDTV.
