Sony Handycam DCR-SR85

The Sony Handycam DCR-SR85 offers almost everything the company claims. It's very easy to use, goes from off to recording in seconds, is small enough to throw in a bag, and its 60GB hard drive delivers anywhere from 14 to 41 hours of recording time...

Lightweight, compact design; 60GB of storage and recording ability to Memory Stick cards; responsive touch screen; simple operation.

Overpriced for what it delivers; no optical image stabilization.

If you don't want to, need to, or simply can't shell out a couple hundred dollars more for an HD camcorder, the Sony Handycam DCR-SR85 delivers decent SD video and copious recording time.

Sony Handycam DCR-SR85 Camcorder Review

With a 60GB internal hard drive, the DCR-SR85 (MSRP $549.99) has the largest storage capacity of Sony's entry level standard definition camcorders. Replacing last year's DCR-SR42, Sony added a larger hard drive, a slightly revamped design, and a 100%...

Sony DCR-SR85

The DCR-SR85 is yet another addition to Sony's exhaustive HDD handycam range. Its main features include a 60GB hard drive, a 25x optical zoom and a me...

60GB hard drive, decent specs for the asking price, memory stick slot, beginner-friendly touch screen interface

Poor stills mode, struggles under low lighting

The Sony DCR-SR85 is a good quality mid-range camcorder that easily matches any standard-def model in its price range. If you're determined to ignore the HD boom, you could certainly do a lot worse than this.

Worth to buy.

A very good camcorder. I bought this in Sydney (after looking for the right one). It has very good quality, enough hard drive space and night shot. It's worth buying.

It has high quality video (even on a HD TV), 60GB of hard drive space (about 14 hours on high quality) and night shot (for taking videos during night). Nice "Let's Enjoy Video" DVD. Still pictures a good

The software that comes with it could be better

Generally Happy with purchase

Makes for a satisfactory SD video camera, definitely superb if you're just goint to use it for online vids (like me). Electronic stabilization works quite well, not superb but works definitely! Smooth zooming, i like that. If you can save a little...

decent video capture ; good white balance ; 60GB HDD ; supports memory stick ; face index (shows detected faces in a vid file) ; night shot ; dock ; easy mode

somewhat expensive ; grainy when in low light ; provided battery is TERRIBLE (lasts ~90mins only?!) ; as a first time buyer of a camcorder I wish there was a bundled video editor

"Picture quality is Good but computer support is poor"

If you want to make movies Roxio 10.2 and Windows Movie Maker will not capture video from this camera which defeats the purpose of having a camcorder. I had to save the files as data as is if the camcorder were a hard-drive.

Picture quality

Windows Vista recognizes the camcorder but you can not capture the video.

Picture quality ; light weight ; hard drive space

Windows Vista recognizes the camcorder but you can not capture the video ; Included software is proprietary and only for picture use. Useless
