Sony Handycam HDR-XR550V review:

Given its accouterments--a large G series lens, 240GB hard disk, 3.5-inch LCD and EVF, headphone and mic jacks, and shutter and iris controls--the Sony Handycam HDR-XR550V's price well north of $1,000 may be a bit painful, but not much of a surprise....

Full manual feature set for video; geotagging for video is fun, if not very practical; autofocus system performs very well.

Annoying menu system; no wind filter or meaningful audio controls; relatively big and heavy; expensive; defaults to low resolution, not-full-HD video quality; cumbersome touch-screen interface.

The Sony Handycam HDR-XR550V fares well compared with the competition, though its video could be a bit sharper and the interface less cumbersome. Unless you absolutely need to store a lot of video on the camcorder--which I don't suggest--or have large...

Sony HDR-XR550 review

Sony always wants to go the extra mile and its latest Full HD shooter, complete with 240GB hard drive, has the capacity to put the 32GB and 64GB storage of rival cams well and truly in the shade. Favouring HDD (hard disk drive) over flash memory, the...

Sony Handycam HDR-XR550V

The XR550V boasts a number of important improvements, including 24Mbps recording, wide-angle lens and SD card support. We'd recommend the flash-only CX550V, unless you have gigantic hands or require 240GB of storage.

Possibly worth it.

Have "grown up" on Sony: from TRV900 through to XDCam. Budget restraints forced this purchase, and the picture quality and ease of use has blown away client & DoP respectively. Virtually a point & shoot camera when on auto settings, it has passable low...

easy to use ; surprisingly good picture ;

touch screen annoyingly small & seemingly fragile ; external audio source required ;

Another learning curve that makes you ask if going HD is worth it.. SONY is bent on territorialism.. Even using Vegus software, I am unable to capture from this cam to a new DELL XPS Desktop..Frustrating

has alot of manual and auto options. lov the touch screen and jiggle proof footage ;

Clear crisp videos, good size hard disk, built in mic, easy transfer of files to portable storage ;

Great Camera

This camera is great for any level of shooter. I shoot with a lot of pro cams, but this is my preference if its for candid, web based projects. Check out my portfolio I shot everything on here with this camera.

Tons of memory, perfect imaging system ;

Lack of lens assessories and hookups ;

A professional camcorder in disguise.
