Sony Handycam NEX-VG10 (with 18-200mm lens)

Every time I try to form a coherent opinion of the Sony NEX-VG10 camcorder, I end up circling back to, "Well, it's the first try." On one hand, it delivers the flexibility of interchangeable lenses in a traditional run-and-gun design at a relatively...

The Sony Handycam NEX-VG10 brings interchangeable-lens flexibility to camcorders at a prosumer price.

Though it's priced like a high-end camcorder, with the exception of the lenses the VG10's feature set and video quality don't match that of much cheaper models.

A solid first effort in a nascent category, the Sony Handycam NEX-VG10 nevertheless needs some conceptual refinement.

Sony NEX-VG10 Camcorder with Interchangeable Lens Reviewed

Interchangeable lenses ; Large sensor - very shallow depth of field ; User friendly, intuitive controls

Should have a power zoom to minimize wrist rotation ; Handheld use picks up substantial handling noise ; May be a bit pricey for the strictly consumer market

If you're looking for near-prosumer performance on a sub-prosumer budget then you'll want to have a serious look at the Sony NEX-VG10.

Sony NEX-VG10 Review

An unbeatable choice for anyone wanting a taste of pro-quality on a budget

Off the back of Sony’s super-cool NEX-3 and NEX-5 swappable-lens compact cameras comes the VG10 – a camcorder that pushes the boundaries of what you can expect from a high-end, hi-def shooter.Any of

Sony NEX-VG10 hands-on test

With lens-swapping capability and a large sensor, the Sony Handycam NEX-VG10 camcorder looks set to open up a new chapter in consumer video recording.

Interchangeable lenses allow for cinematic effects ; Bursting with pro video features ; High-quality microphone ; Lightweight

Mic is ugly ; Limited range of lenses

As hi-def video recording is becoming more common on dSLRs, they're in direct competition with the VG10. The VG10 is heavier than a dSLR, but packs video-specific features, like a high-quality mic, that haven't yet made it to video-filming dSLRs

The Sony NEX-VG10 is slated for availability in September for $2000 (£1,296 ex VAT); that's about one-third of the rumoured price for Panasonic's interchangeable-lens AG-AF100 camcorder, which doesn't have official pricing or release-date information...

Good but half baked

This camera has the possible makings of a great light portable multipurpose semi pro video and still camera for field journalism and doco makers BUT short sighted marketing decisions by sony to remove key features like RAW photo format and 25i (30i)...

This camera has a nice feel, light but some solidness in body & handgrip, great viewfinder and microphone and nice lens that makes it much easier to use than SLR type bodies for shooting video. Picture quality is impressive and easy to use menu contr

Why did sony take away RAW when other NEX models have it? Why is there only 25P (30P) if it is marketed as a semipro video camera? Progressive scan picture shudder is intolerable when you are film moving subjects or panning. A time lapse video mode woul
