Sony HDR-CX130

The Flip is heading for extinction but it's not the end of the camcorder world. There are tons of options available such as the new Sony CX130, a video maker that blows Flips and their kindred spirits out of the water. Now let's see if it's worth more...

30x wide-angle lens ; Excellent AVCHD videos ; 3-inch touchscreen LCD ; Nice compact design

Poor 3.3MP photos ; Make sure you set LCD to bright when in tough sunlight ; Some inscrutable icons

The Sony Handycam HDR-CX130 is an excellent tool for capturing video memories. It doesn’t have all the features in the world but it won't run you $1,000 either.

Sony Handycam HDR-CX130-160 review: Sony Handycam HDR-CX130-160

A wide-angle lens, built-in USB cable, and consistently good automated behavior highlight the otherwise no-frills Sony Handycam HDR-CX130 , CX160 , and XR160 camcorders.

The sub-HD resolution sensor on these camcorders produces merely satisfactory video.

Typical for their price class, the no-frills Sony Handycam HDR-CX130, CX160, and XR160 produce generally subpar HD video, but if you're not picky you'll probably be fine. The CX130 is the best buy of the three, as long as you go cheap on the memory card.

Sony Handycam HDR-CX130 Camcorder

Stunning video quality, Consumer testers found the controls easy to use, Comfortable grip, Sensitive touch screen, 30x optical zoom works great

Poor low-light photographs

Sony Handycam HDR-CX130

The CX130 is an impressive camcorder within its price range, featuring a stylish exterior and large LCD screen, though its image and video quality don't quite live up to the aesthetics.

Good low-light performance ; Pleasing design ; Easy-to-use interface and menus

Colours could be more vibrant

Overall, the Sony HDR-CX130 is an impressive camcorder within its price range. Predictably, Sony has mastered the art of the camera's appearance, making it smooth and sleek with a trendy touchscreen menu and large LCD screen. The functionality of the...

Sony HDR-CX130E

Recording to Sony Memory Stick Pro card or all varieties of SD for relative convenience, this near entry-level model in Sony's HD camcorder range incorporates a sensitive 1/4in Exmor R CMOS sensor for better results shooting in dim light and with a...

Large and obvious buttons; decent feature set for a reasonable price; choice of SD or Memory Stick storage; bright lights

Plasticky construction, though many will appreciate the larger controls; detail could be sharper

Available in red or black, this is a good mid-price option, even if detail isn’t as sharp as footage from the Canon or Panasonic.

Sony HDR-CX130E review

Recording to removable Memory Stick or SD flash, the CX130's 16GB capacity is expandable and relatively future-proofed

Available in red or black, this is a good mid-price option, even if detail isn’t as sharp as footage from the Canon or Panasonic.

"Can take cheap, HQ video for a cheap price."

I say its worth the money, as though i found a proffesinal camera on a discount site for less than it is now. and its no longer sold on sony's online store.

1. High definition recording.

1. no "professional" look.

Sony HDR-CX130

Small and light camera with some interesting features. The 30x optical zoom and wide angle lens are really fantastic. It has some specific programming at least interesting, as the “detector faces and smiles” that takes pictures automatically during...

HD at a reasonable price

I replaced (so I thought) an older Hi-8 handycam with this, thinking the smaller profile would be better to handle. With the requirement for the LCD door to be open in order to use, I effectively doubled the thickness of my old camcorder. The menu...

HD, good lowish light performance (not great, see other comments). Sony brand. Plays well with Win7

Have to keep the viewing LCD open to record. Cumbersome touch-screen menu system. Did I mention cumbersome touch-screen menu system? Owner's manual

Mac Workaround

I'll start off by saying that there IS A MAC WORKAROUND. The 60p mode will not be recognized in Final Cut Pro / Express or iMovie because Apple has not updated the AVCHD codec to the latest standard. You need to manually copy the files from the camera...

60fps, great sound, amazing zoom range, automatic lens cover

Larger than previous model, 60p not yet supported in FCP / iMovie due to old codec standards
